The approach sets the tone long before you reach the front door. A winding drive through the Sologne forest opens onto grounds so immaculately kept they feel almost painterly, with centuries-old trees, sculpted hedges, and flowering gardens that shift with the seasons. Auberge des Templiers is the kind of place that feels discovered rather than arrived at, a country estate where stone facades and climbing ivy suggest generations of careful stewardship. The architecture carries the warmth of a private manor, half-timbered and low-slung, set across a parkland of nearly 30 acres where peacocks roam freely and the silence is broken only by birdsong.
Accommodations are spread between the main building and a collection of independent cottages and suites nestled throughout the grounds, each with its own character. Rooms draw on classic French country style with a sense of refinement that never veers into ostentation. Expect polished antiques, rich textiles, and views that open onto private garden terraces or the surrounding woodland. The variety of room categories means you might find yourself in a spacious junior suite overlooking a pond or in a more intimate cottage tucked among the trees, each offering a distinct relationship to the landscape.
The restaurant at Auberge des Templiers is the property's beating heart, a destination in its own right. The dining room is elegant and unhurried, with tables dressed in white linen and picture windows framing the gardens. The cuisine is rooted in the traditions of the Loire Valley and the Sologne, drawing on game, freshwater fish, and seasonal produce, prepared with a precision and creativity that has earned enduring recognition. The wine list leans heavily into Loire appellations while reaching across France's great regions, and the sommelier's recommendations feel personal rather than performative. In warmer months, meals extend to an outdoor terrace where the garden becomes an extension of the dining experience, dappled light filtering through the canopy of old trees.
Beyond the table, the grounds themselves are the primary amenity. Walking paths wind through the park, passing a heated outdoor swimming pool, quiet reading corners, and stretches of garden that invite aimless exploration. The Sologne is a region defined by its forests, its network of small lakes and waterways, and its deep connection to French rural heritage. The Loire Valley's châteaux are within easy reach, but the property's own landscape often proves reason enough to stay close. There is a stillness here that is neither curated nor imposed but simply the natural result of a place that has been tended with devotion for decades. Auberge des Templiers leaves you with the feeling of having spent time inside a private world, one where the rituals of French country life unfold at a pace that makes returning to the everyday feel like it can wait a little longer.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular quietness here that feels earned rather than curated — the kind that comes from a property shaped by one family's vision since the 1950s, set beneath oaks that were old long before anyone thought to welcome guests. Auberge des Templiers carries the unhurried confidence of a place that knows exactly what it is: a former post house in a small Loire Valley village where rustic architecture and serious gastronomy coexist without tension. Rooms feel individually considered rather than decorated to a template, and the kitchen operates with the conviction of a standalone destination, turning wild mushroom ravioli with truffle jus into something you'll think about weeks later. It suits the traveler who finds more romance in a thatched roof and a glass of Sancerre than in spectacle.
