The approach alone tells you this is something different. Past rice terraces and down a winding road on the outskirts of Ubud, Bambu Indah emerges not as a constructed resort but as a gathered village, a collection of antique Javanese bridal homes that were dismantled, transported across the Indonesian archipelago, and rebuilt with reverence on the jungle-draped banks of the Ayung River. Each structure carries the patina of its original life, its hand-carved teak columns and weathered joinery intact, now set among bamboo pavilions, wild gardens, and natural swimming pools fed by the river itself. The property was founded by John and Cynthia Hardy, whose deep commitment to sustainable design and Balinese craft produced something that feels less like a hotel and more like an ongoing experiment in living lightly on the land.
Accommodations range from restored Javanese joglo houses with open-air living spaces and canopied beds to bamboo structures that rise on stilts above the landscape, their walls woven and their views unobstructed. Some rooms feature outdoor stone baths, others offer private terraces overlooking the river gorge. The natural spring-water swimming pool, carved into the hillside and bordered by stone and jungle, is one of the property's most distinctive features. Nearby, a second pool built from reclaimed materials sits surrounded by tropical planting. The grounds themselves are an immersive experience, with permaculture gardens, free-roaming ducks and chickens, and walking paths that wind through bamboo groves toward the river below.
Meals at Bambu Indah reflect the same philosophy that shapes every other element of the property. The restaurant serves Indonesian and international dishes that draw heavily from the on-site gardens, with ingredients harvested daily. Breakfast unfolds in an open-air pavilion overlooking the valley, and communal dinners often take on a convivial, family-table atmosphere. The kitchen's orientation toward local, seasonal produce feels entirely natural here rather than performative. Beyond dining, the property offers river tubing along the Ayung, visits to the adjacent Green School campus founded by the Hardys, and excursions into the surrounding rice paddies and villages that define this stretch of central Bali.
Ubud's cultural center is a short drive away, with its galleries, temples, and traditional dance performances, but Bambu Indah occupies a world that feels deliberately removed from the town's busier corridors. The rhythm here is unhurried and slightly wild. You wake to the sound of the river and the chorus of the valley. You walk barefoot on reclaimed wood floors. You swim in water that arrives cold from the earth. Bambu Indah does not attempt to insulate you from its environment. It asks you to step closer to it, to inhabit a place where heritage architecture, radical sustainability, and the lush disorder of the Balinese jungle exist in honest, unpolished conversation.

What we love about this stay
There's something quietly radical about a place that houses you inside centuries-old Javanese teak homes while surrounding you with bamboo architecture that feels like it grew straight from the hillside. Bambu Indah doesn't perform sustainability—it inhabits it, down to the natural pool filtered without chemicals, where swimming feels less like a resort amenity and more like slipping into the jungle's own water system. The food at Dapoer traces an honest line from the organic gardens to your plate, and the Balinese flavors taste rooted rather than curated. What stays with you is how the place holds tension between aged wood and bold bamboo, between history and experiment, without ever losing its warmth. It's for the traveler who wants beauty with conviction.

This was my second stay at this hotel, and it was a different experience—one that was truly memorable and natural. The details in the structure of each room are impressive, and you really feel connected to nature; it’s exquisite. I highly recommend it for couples.

An Experience of Comfort and Authenticity We couldn’t have chosen a better place to arrive in Bali. This hotel truly captures the Balinese atmosphere, you don’t even need to leave it. The food is wonderful, the service is exceptional. There’s a river, pools, local attractions, two restaurants, a spa, and a bar, everything you need in one place. For those who appreciate details, Bambu Indah is impeccable. From organic soaps, shampoos and repellents to healthy food made with natural, organic ingredients, everything reflects care and authenticity. The entire team is simply the heart of the hotel. My wife and I are absolutely delighted. From the moment we were picked up for the transfer, we felt warmly welcomed. We stayed at Dove House and Moon House, one felt like a cozy nest, and the other, an open space surrounded by nature. And there are even a few surprises not shown on the website or Booking, which make the experience even more extraordinary.
