The approach is almost theatrical. A pale, ornate façade rises from the clifftop in Praia da Rocha, its Belle Époque architecture framed by the wide blue expanse of the Atlantic below. Bela Vista Hotel & Spa, a Relais & Châteaux property and one of the Algarve's first purpose-built hotels, has occupied this stretch of southern Portuguese coastline since 1934. The building itself tells the story: hand-painted azulejo tiles line the interiors, vaulted ceilings arch overhead, and original architectural details have been carefully preserved through successive generations of the same family. A more contemporary wing extends the property without disrupting its character, offering clean-lined rooms and suites that open toward the ocean. Throughout, the interplay between heritage and modernity feels unforced, a property that has simply evolved with time rather than chasing it.
Thirty-eight rooms and suites are divided between the original historic building and the newer wing, each offering a distinct experience. The classic rooms carry the patina of the original structure, with period furniture, ornamental ceilings, and antique details that feel genuinely lived-in rather than staged. The contemporary rooms, by contrast, are light-filled and minimal, many with private terraces and unobstructed views of the sea and the dramatic rock formations that define this coastline. Whichever wing you choose, the sense of proximity to the water is constant. A private staircase carved into the cliff leads directly down to the beach, connecting the hotel's elevated perch to the sand and surf below.
Dining at Bela Vista centers on Vista Restaurant, where the menu draws deeply from the Algarve's coastal larder and Portuguese culinary traditions. Seafood is central, prepared with a refinement that reflects the property's Relais & Châteaux affiliation, and the terrace offers one of the region's most striking settings for a meal, with the Atlantic stretching to the horizon. For more casual moments, the poolside bar provides cocktails and lighter fare against a backdrop of ocean and sky. The hotel's spa occupies a serene space where treatments incorporate local botanicals and marine-inspired rituals, offering a counterpoint to days spent exploring the coast. An outdoor pool sits on the cliff's edge, its infinity line dissolving into the blue below.
The Algarve's appeal extends well beyond the hotel's grounds. The coastline here is defined by golden limestone cliffs, sea caves, and secluded coves that rank among Europe's most dramatic shorelines. Praia da Rocha itself is one of the region's most celebrated beaches, and the old fishing town of Portimão sits just minutes away, offering markets, riverside restaurants, and a culture shaped by centuries of maritime life. Further afield, the quieter reaches of the western Algarve and the protected landscapes near Sagres reward those willing to explore.
What lingers at Bela Vista is a sense of continuity. This is not a property assembled from a concept deck or designed to photograph well on a single visit. It is a place where the tiles on the walls have watched decades pass, where the cliff path to the beach has been walked by generations, and where the rhythm of the Atlantic sets the pace for everything. You leave carrying the particular warmth of a hotel that belongs exactly where it stands.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular quality to a place that was the first of its kind in a region — it carries a sense of belonging that newer properties spend years trying to manufacture. Bela Vista sits on the Praia da Rocha cliffs with the quiet confidence of a house that's always been here, its three distinct buildings each with their own design personality but united by a nautical thread that feels earned rather than decorative. The salt air, the tile patterns underfoot, the sound of waves reaching your balcony — these aren't curated touches, they're simply what happens when a hotel grows into its landscape over time. Dining on the terrace with Algarvean cooking and good Portuguese wine feels less like a restaurant occasion and more like being hosted by someone who genuinely knows this coast.
