The drive north along Highway One narrows into something quieter past Fort Bragg, and then the land opens. Perched on a bluff overlooking Smuggler's Cove and the vast Pacific beyond, Brewery Gulch Inn sits where the Mendocino Coast reveals its most dramatic geometry. The building itself is constructed from locally salvaged redwood, its architecture warm and grounded against the salt air and shifting fog. Floor-to-ceiling windows draw the ocean inside, and the scale feels intimate rather than grand, a place built to hold stillness rather than spectacle.
Ten guest rooms make up the inn, each designed with gas fireplaces, private decks or balconies, and ocean views that shift with the weather and the hour. Heated bathroom floors, luxurious linens, and soaking tubs in select rooms speak to a comfort that is deeply considered without being fussy. There are no televisions competing for attention. Instead, the rooms orient you outward, toward the water and the coastal light, or inward, toward rest. The Great Room serves as the inn's communal heart, its redwood beams and crackling fireplace offering a place to settle with a book or a glass of wine from the complimentary evening reception.
Breakfast at Brewery Gulch Inn is a defining ritual. A multi-course affair prepared each morning, it features locally sourced ingredients and dishes that reflect the agricultural character of the Mendocino region. Guests gather in the dining area as the morning fog lifts from the cove, and the meal unfolds at a pace that matches the landscape. The inn's gardens supply herbs and produce seasonally, tying the kitchen to the land just outside the door. In the evening, wine and hors d'oeuvres bring guests together again before they scatter to explore the coast or retreat to their rooms.
The surrounding landscape is the inn's greatest amenity. The Mendocino Coast Trail system threads through nearby headlands, and the town of Mendocino, with its galleries, shops, and weathered Victorian architecture, sits just a short drive south. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, the Point Cabrillo Light Station, and miles of rugged, largely undeveloped shoreline are all within easy reach. Kayaking, whale watching, and tide pool exploration mark the seasons here, each one offering a different mood along this stretch of Northern California.
Brewery Gulch Inn leaves you with a particular kind of quiet. Not emptiness, but a recalibration. The redwood, the fog, the sound of waves reaching the bluff below your window. It is a place that asks very little of you and gives back something unhurried and real.

What we love about this stay
There's a quietness here that has nothing to do with silence — it's more the feeling of a place built in genuine conversation with its landscape. The redwood paneling isn't decorative shorthand for "rustic"; it's the actual material identity of the Mendocino coast brought indoors, crafted with a care you notice in the joinery and the way firelight moves across it. Rooms face forest and ocean simultaneously, which gives mornings a particular quality — mist, trees, the sense of being held between two immensities. The evening wine hour by the lobby fireplace feels less like a programmed amenity and more like the natural rhythm of a house that understands hospitality as atmosphere, not performance. This is a place for people who want to feel the weight of old-growth trees and wild coastline without sacrificing comfort, and who recognize that the best stays leave you a little different than they found you.

Wonderfully quiet, beautiful and cozy. To warm up next to the fireplace on a chilly evening during a game of chess. Even though we travel a lot, this is our all time favorite

We visited brewery gulch inn for a post engagement celebration and had the most amazing time! We picked the Osprey room and were not disappointed. The room itself is comfortable with lots of space and the fireplace was nice to sit by on colder nights, but the large soaking tub took the cake. We also enjoyed the view from the balcony but it was a bit colder than usual during our stay - thankfully the plush robes helped with that a bit. Meals here were as good as everyone makes them seem, breakfast is huge with a great selection. The hardest part is choosing what to get when you want it all. And the dinner trays were very well done and good sized too! The wine hour was a nice surprise as well, great selections and all very good with bottles available for purchase. Last but certainly not least I have to give a huge shout out to the staff who helped make our little engagement getaway feel truly special. Everyone was so welcoming, friendly, helpful and accommodating. They give great recommendations for places to see and added small touches during our stay that really helped us feel at home. We'll definitely be back!

This was a very nice place to stay- I'll say that freely at the outset. That said: I think I had too high of expectations. I had read the Travel and Leisure give #7 in California and I think Conde Naste(?) gave top 50 in the country. And again, it's a very nice place to stay, but I was never blown away. The kitchen was great in working with my wife who has celiac, to adjust the menu. In our mid 30's, we were a few decades below the average clientele.

Beautiful views and wonderful service but value is not quite there. I tried to give some constructive feedback but never heard back from the team. Our room was valued at over $600/night, so I had high expectations, but our room was basically not sound proofed at all. I could hear every single thing that happened with my upstairs neighbors - every cough, sneeze and trip to the bathroom. We splurged on this for our babymoon, and the noise was so disruptive when it's already so hard to get good sleep in the third trimester. The food was delicious (probably the best part) and we enjoyed the views but I don't think we can swing this price tag again knowing what we get in exchange. I also found the technology a bit lacking - TVs were old, DVDs were scratched and no streaming availability (all I wanted to do was Netflix and chill so this was a disappointment). I wish I had a better report, I really wanted to fall in love with this place!

Spent a couple of nights at BGI because the place was really hyped up by both guest reviews and Travel Awards. We left feeling underwhelmed, honestly. For starters, the food was below expectations. Dinner one night was two mini burgers. What? Hamburgers in a resort extolling the virtues of its cuisine??? Dinner the second night was a chicken dish. The chicken was so tough I can only imagine the chef was off that night and chicken prepared the day before was defrosted and served to unsuspecting guests. Really way below and average meal, no less a meal in a resort that hypes up its food quality. Two strikeouts. And the "millionaire's bacon?" Quite ordinary bacon. If you want to offer a "millionaire's bacon," try emulating the bacon appetizer at Peter Luger's Steakhouse in NYC. That's "millionaire's bacon!!!" Rooms were average. The front desk staff were great. Overall, a disappointment. Sorry.
