Two curved colonial buildings from the 1880s rise from a forested hillside on Sentosa Island, their white facades and deep verandas softened by decades of tropical canopy. Capella Singapore occupies thirty acres of manicured grounds where tangled rain trees give way to immaculate lawns, reflecting pools, and a stillness that feels almost impossible given the proximity to one of Asia's most kinetic cities. The property was reimagined by Foster + Partners, whose intervention is unmistakable: a sweeping contemporary structure arcs between the restored colonial wings, all glass and clean geometry, connecting past and present with a confidence that never feels forced. The effect on arrival is cinematic but unhurried, a winding drive through dense greenery that delays the reveal until the last possible moment.
Accommodations range from spacious rooms and suites within the colonial manors and the contemporary wing to standalone villas and a signature manor house, each with its own pool and generous outdoor living space. The villas are set into the hillside among frangipani and palms, their interiors layered with natural materials, deep soaking tubs, and floor-to-ceiling glass that frames the surrounding green. The property's culinary identity is anchored by several distinct venues. The Knolls serves Mediterranean-inspired cuisine in a breezy poolside setting surrounded by tropical gardens, while Chinese fine dining can be found at Cassia, where regional Cantonese traditions are given careful, seasonal expression. The Living Room functions as the hotel's social heart, a light-filled lounge for afternoon tea, cocktails, and the kind of lingering conversation that large resort lobbies rarely encourage. Bob's Bar, an intimate space named for the building's colonial-era heritage, draws a following for its cocktail program and relaxed evening atmosphere.
The grounds reward those who slow down. Three outdoor pools are staggered across the landscape, each with a different character and orientation. Auriga Spa occupies its own enclave on property, offering treatments rooted in the lunar cycle and a menu of wellness rituals designed around natural botanicals. For families, Capella's programming includes a dedicated children's experience and outdoor spaces scaled for exploration. The surrounding Sentosa coastline provides easy access to beaches, nature trails, and the broader island's attractions, while a short causeway crossing returns you to the dense energy of Singapore's central districts, from the hawker centers of Chinatown to the galleries of Gillman Barracks.
What stays with you at Capella Singapore is the particular quality of its quiet. Not silence exactly, but a lush, layered stillness shaped by birdsong, moving water, and the rustle of a canopy that has been growing here far longer than any building. It is a property where architecture defers to landscape, where the scale is generous but the feeling is intimate, and where the distance from the city feels measured not in kilometers but in the time it takes to stop checking the clock.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular quality to a property that sits on thirty acres of rainforest on an island just off a hyper-modern city — it creates this tension between deep stillness and proximity to everything, and Capella leans into that tension beautifully. The architecture holds colonial bones alongside contemporary gestures, which gives it a groundedness that most resort design lacks. You feel it in the scale of the place — the grounds don't perform luxury so much as absorb you into something quieter. The spa's lunar-cycle approach to wellness feels genuinely idiosyncratic rather than borrowed. And the Culturists — their dedicated hosts — suggest a property that wants to know you, not just serve you. It's the kind of place that lingers not as a highlight reel but as a mood you can't quite shake.

we are 4th time returning guests of Capella usually accompanied by our small dog. Their Italian and Chinese restaurants are now pet-friendly so that we could bring our small dog with us for breakfast and dinner at the outdoor terrace seats and this is definitely a plus point. Overall our stay was very comfortable and the Palawan Brach is just mins away!
