The entrance is unassuming, as the best ones in Oaxaca tend to be. A carved stone doorway along a quiet street near the Zócalo gives way to an open courtyard where bougainvillea climbs weathered columns and light pools across terra cotta tile. Casa Antonieta occupies a restored colonial-era residence in the historic center, its architecture carrying the layered patina of centuries while its interiors speak to a careful, contemporary sensibility. The bones of the building remain honest: thick adobe walls, exposed wooden beams, ironwork balconies overlooking the central patio. What has been added feels deliberate rather than decorative, a curation of local textiles, handcrafted furnishings, and artwork that roots the property firmly in Oaxacan creative tradition.
The rooms at Casa Antonieta are arranged around the courtyard in the traditional manner, each one distinct in layout and character. High ceilings and deep-set windows keep interiors cool even during the warmest months, and the palette draws from the surrounding landscape: clay, indigo, sage, and the warm ochre of late afternoon light against centuries-old plaster. Accommodations range in size and configuration, but share a consistent quietness, an unhurried quality that lets the details of the space speak for themselves. Tiled bathrooms, quality linens, and carefully chosen locally made amenities complete the picture without excess.
Mornings here begin in the courtyard or on the rooftop terrace, where breakfast brings together the flavors of the region. Oaxacan chocolate, fresh tropical fruit, handmade tortillas, and mole in its many forms anchor the culinary experience, connecting guests to the food traditions that make this city a destination in its own right. The rooftop offers a vantage point over the historic center's terra cotta roofscape, with views toward the Church of Santo Domingo and the surrounding sierra. It is a natural gathering point as the day softens, the kind of place where mezcal arrives unhurried and conversation follows the pace of the fading light.
The location places guests at the center of Oaxaca's cultural life. Markets, galleries, mezcalerías, and centuries-old churches are all within walking distance. The Zócalo and its surrounding arcades are moments away, and the city's deeper layers, its textile workshops, its printmaking studios, its neighborhood comedores, unfold naturally from this starting point. Casa Antonieta does not attempt to compete with the city outside its walls. Instead, it offers a place to return to, a courtyard that holds the quiet at the center of one of Mexico's most vibrant and storied destinations. The rhythm it sets is distinctly Oaxacan: unhurried, grounded, rich in the things that matter.

What we love about this stay
What stays with you here is the weight of the walls — original colonial stone that holds centuries of Oaxacan life — paired with an intimacy that feels personally curated rather than designed by committee. The copal incense drifting through the courtyard, the jacaranda blooms, the bespoke furnishings and local art that each carry their own provenance — it all creates a sensory language specific to this place. Casa Antonieta doesn't perform luxury so much as embed you in a living culture, especially at the table, where dishes like mole negro arrive with a complexity that mirrors the city itself. It's the kind of property that suits travelers who want to feel Oaxaca rather than observe it from a distance.

The best. We stayed in a terrible Airbnb and had to make a quick change for the terrible noise and extreme temperature. We literally asked chat GPT to list the quiets hotels in Oaxaca Centro. This option came as the first one. We made the reservation using Booking and immediately called. Berenice was amazing, the hotel is super quiet and the experience changed our final day in Oaxaca.... Don't make the mistake we made, and stayed in a noisy location. Go with the best. Casa Antonieta, is the best.
