The road climbs through granite villages and terraced hillsides before the landscape opens into something vast and elemental. At the edge of Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Portugal's highest mountain range, Casa de São Lourenço occupies a mid-century building reimagined by architects Eduardo Souto de Moura and Graça Correia. The structure sits at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, its clean modernist lines in quiet dialogue with the surrounding rock, heather, and sky. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the glacial valley below, and the interiors carry a warmth that feels earned rather than imposed. Local wool, granite, and dark timber run throughout, grounding the design in the materials of this remote highland landscape.
The hotel's twenty rooms are deliberately restrained in number and generous in proportion. Each is oriented toward the valley or the surrounding peaks, with natural stone walls, wooden floors, and textiles woven by local artisans creating a continuity between the building and its terrain. Bathrooms feature granite detailing and clean contemporary fixtures. The effect is spare but never austere, a careful balance between modernist discipline and the rugged character of the Estrela highlands.
At the hotel's restaurant, the kitchen draws from the pastoral traditions of the Beira Interior region. Queijo Serra da Estrela, the storied sheep's milk cheese produced in surrounding villages, anchors a menu built on seasonal mountain ingredients. Dishes reflect the altitude and the seasons, with hearty preparations suited to the cool highland climate. Meals are served in a dining room that opens to panoramic views of the valley, and the wine list favors Portuguese producers, many from the nearby Dão and Bairrada regions. A lounge area with a fireplace provides a natural gathering point after long days spent walking the park's trails.
Serra da Estrela Natural Park surrounds the property with marked hiking routes, glacial lakes, and some of the most dramatic topography in Portugal. The Mondego River, the country's longest river flowing entirely within its borders, begins its course nearby. In winter, snow dusts the upper peaks and the landscape takes on a spare, almost Nordic character. In warmer months, wildflowers and grazing flocks return to the high pastures. The park's network of trails connects ancient shepherd paths, granite outcrops, and views that stretch across the Iberian plateau. The village of Manteigas, nestled in the Zêzere glacial valley below, offers a glimpse of highland life that has changed slowly over centuries.
Casa de São Lourenço is a property shaped as much by what surrounds it as by what exists within its walls. The architecture serves as a frame for the landscape rather than a distraction from it. Days here tend to follow the rhythm of the mountain itself: morning walks through heather and stone, long meals built around regional tradition, evenings spent watching light shift across the valley. It is a place where Portugal reveals a side of itself that most visitors never encounter, high, quiet, and profoundly unhurried.

What we love about this stay
There's something about the altitude here that recalibrates you — the Serra da Estrela doesn't just surround this hotel, it defines its entire personality. The architecture feels born from the landscape, all natural materials and quiet restraint, as if the building is simply continuing a conversation the mountains started. Rooms are oriented toward that vast, rugged panorama through floor-to-ceiling glass, so the outside never fully stays outside. It's a place built for people who find grandeur in remoteness rather than spectacle. The dining leans into Portuguese tradition with local ingredients and regional wines, and the wellness spaces — pool, sauna, hammam — feel less like amenities and more like extensions of the mountain's own stillness. What lingers is the sense that you've gone somewhere genuinely apart, not just geographically but emotionally.

The best hotel we've ever stayed at The location (quiet and surrounded by plenty of untouched nature), the design and architecture of the hotel, the breathtaking view from our (panoramic) room, the cleanliness, the amenities, complimentary toiletries and snacks, the warmth of the staff. The food was mind-blowing (both at breakfast and dinner). The complimentary welcome drinks and nibbles and the daily activities available were a really nice touch. The overall attention to detail and thoughtfulness that goes into it all is seriously outstanding. Frankly THE best hotel we've ever stayed at. We have not stopped recommending it to friends and family since.

Amazing design, professional staff and excellent food I wanted to visit this hotel ever since I saw it on Design Hotels and on Instagram, so I booked a specific room and we traveled from Lisbon for it. Check-in was seamless and even though the room I wanted wasn’t available at first, the staff were very professional, patient and polite. They showed me the room and even offered to have it cleaned quickly so we could take it. However, another equivalent mirror room turned out to be one I liked even more, so we stayed with the initially allocated room. Excellent service from breakfast to dinner in their restaurant. I had expected less because I saw some feedback on Booking about portion sizes, but everything exceeded expectations: food was great, portions were not small at all and again the staff were very helpful, attentive and caring without ever being intrusive. We didn’t try the spa or the swimming pool, but those also looked great. The fireplaces throughout the hotel have a cozy, wooden smell. Breakfast had a great selection, including a separate à-la-carte menu. I especially liked the baked apples with cinnamon. And of course, the room I booked was beautifully designed, exactly what I hoped to see, with a very comfortable bed, crisp bedsheets, a balcony view, concrete walls and a glass wall. The weather was quite cold and the staff immediately turned the heater up, even brought an additional one without hesitation. To conclude, the only regret is that we didn’t stay longer because we had a flight back. I will definitely return if I’m in the area again. Thank you for your service.
