Castle Hill Inn occupies a forty-acre peninsula along Newport's Ocean Drive, where the rocky shoreline of Narragansett Bay opens into the Atlantic. The property is anchored by the 1874 Alexander Agassiz mansion, a shingled Victorian residence built for the Harvard naturalist as a summer retreat. Its wood-paneled parlors, original fireplaces, and intimate library remain intact, lending the main house a sense of unhurried permanence. Arriving here, you pass through coastal grasslands and weathered stone before the mansion reveals itself against the water, its wraparound porch framing one of the most expansive ocean views on the New England coast.
Accommodations are spread across several distinct settings on the property. The main house holds individually appointed guest rooms with period details and views of the bay. Harbor Houses sit closer to the water's edge, offering private decks and a more contemporary coastal sensibility. Beach Houses and Beach Cottages are positioned directly along the shoreline, some with outdoor showers and direct access to the private beach. The Chalet suites, tucked into the hillside, provide a slightly more secluded stay with panoramic water views. Each category carries its own character, but all share an orientation toward the surrounding seascape.
The Dining Room at Castle Hill serves as the property's culinary centerpiece, set within the original mansion with views stretching across the lawn to the bay. Menus draw on seasonal New England ingredients, with seafood featured prominently alongside locally sourced produce. The atmosphere is refined without formality, the kind of room where candlelight and oak paneling do most of the work. For something more casual, The Lawn offers outdoor seating on the mansion's iconic green, where guests gather for cocktails and lighter fare as the sun drops below the horizon. Sunday brunch here has become something of a local institution. Grace, the property's bar, provides a more intimate setting for evening drinks within the historic house.
The grounds themselves are a defining feature. A private beach curves along the peninsula's edge, and Adirondack chairs are scattered across the lawns and rocky outcrops, each positioned for a slightly different vantage of the coastline. The property sits along the route of Newport's celebrated Cliff Walk and Ocean Drive, placing it within easy reach of the Breakers, Rough Point, and the concentration of Gilded Age mansions that define the city's architectural legacy. Newport's harbor, sailing culture, and downtown dining are a short drive away, though many guests find the peninsula itself offers reason enough to stay.
What lingers after a stay at Castle Hill Inn is the quality of light and the closeness of the water. Morning fog lifting off the bay, the particular warmth of afternoon sun on the mansion's shingles, the sound of waves arriving at the private beach below. It is a property shaped as much by its geography as by its hospitality, one where the Atlantic is never out of sight and the rhythm of the coast sets the pace for everything.

What we love about this stay
Request a beach cottage if you can — unobstructed water on three sides, and a privacy the main inn can't match. Book months ahead; they go fast in season.
If the weather cooperates, skip indoor dining and plant yourself on the Sunset Terrace around 7 p.m. — the light on the Atlantic does something extraordinary that last golden hour.
Grab the complimentary bikes one morning and ride toward the Cliff Walk before the crowds arrive. Don't overdress; the peninsula rewards a quieter pace.
Done right, Castle Hill feels less like a hotel stay and more like borrowing someone's very beautiful life for a few days.

This place is amazing. The property is beautiful and so well maintained. We stayed in the mansion in the Bridge Room. It’s on the third floor so not easy on the knees, but we loved it. Old world charm and history is everywhere. Most amazing was the staff. To a person, we were made to feel welcome and appreciated. Truly a wonderful experience. I totally recommend the tasting menu at the on premise Aurelia. We did the wine pairing with it and were blown away. Again, impeccable service. This was one of our most enjoyable experiences in our travels. We look forward to returning.

I have stayed twice now. Once in February and once in March. The rooms are clean and well maintained. I would suggest the beach cottages, so nice to listen to the ocean and see the sun go down. The grounds and beach are wonderful and so is the food and staff. I look forward to a return stay very soon.

My husband and I have been to Castle Hill Inn many times for overnights, dinners, lunches on the lawn, spa treatments, and brunches both in the winter and the summer. What's not to love? The Relais & Chateau quality and service have been delivered every time at every level. This New Year's we chose Castle Hill Inn to celebrate a major passage for my husband. We knew we were in for a treat. What we DIDN'T know is that we were in for Covid as well. We had to cancel a prime time reservation at the last minute with meals, spa, friends coming over, included. Sad. Kelly and Sinn in Reservations, however, went out of their way to take care of us and make sure we have credit for a future reservation which I can't wait to redeem. They didn't need to do this so, a Must Visit Place! Thank you, Castle Hill Inn! You can relax here. They're taking care of you.

We stayed a couple of days in this wonderful resort. Everything was perfect, impeccable service both in the restaurants and in the room. We stayed in the beach cottage and it was an unforgettable experience, perfect location directly on the private and very quiet beach. We enjoyed breakfast served in the room, while we had dinner at The Lawn restaurant. Stunning view, tasty food, attentive and friendly service. We hope to be able to return soon to be pampered again in this paradise!

Booked a last-minute beach cottage getaway and couldn’t have had a more relaxing or better escape. Beautiful waterfront cottage, breathtaking views and treated like royalty by everyone we encountered. No lunch reservations on arrival when they’re fully booked? No problem if you’re an overnight guest, as they’ll escort you to a premium table in the patio section reserved for hotel guests. Want breakfast on the deck of your cottage? It’s delivered piping hot precisely when you requested. Want to relax on their private beach? A friendly attendant sets up your covered lounge chairs, side table, umbrella and towels exactly where you want them, and brings you water and frozen grapes. Want to slip into town for a bite or shopping? Hop on the launch at their marina, and the captain will point out key sites along the way. Lunch and breakfast offerings were interesting and well-presented. If you can, make time for the included afternoon tea with freshly baked treats and tea sandwiches served in a cozy wood-panelled room off the lobby. Thoughtful amenities in the cottage included a dimmable light, umbrellas, heated bathroom floor, a deep soaking tub, a charging station, a small refrigerator stocked with free water (plus a split of champagne, wine, etc. for purchase), etc., and there’s turndown service with chocolates. Storage for clothing was rather limited if you’re planning an extended stay, but no problem for us. We come to Newport often so spent virtually all our time at Castle Hill. Loved every minute and will return.
