Concrete, salt air, and a second life on the shores of western Greece

A row of wine storage tanks built in the 1920s stands at the edge of the Ionian Sea in Kourouta, along the western Peloponnese coast. For decades, these concrete structures held currant wine destined for export, their massive cylindrical forms oriented toward the water like sentinels of a fading industrial age. Today, they hold something else entirely. Dexamenes is a hotel carved from this unlikely architecture, a project of radical preservation where raw concrete, rusted steel, and the patina of a century's exposure to salt and sun have been left deliberately intact. The conversion, led by the Athens-based firm K-Studio, resists the impulse to polish or disguise. Instead, the bones of the original structures define every space, their industrial gravity made habitable but never domesticated.

The hotel's accommodations are housed within the former tanks themselves, each one transformed into a self-contained suite. The interiors pair the bare concrete shells with custom furnishings, warm timber, and carefully edited materials that let the original surfaces speak. Natural light enters through openings that frame the sea or the surrounding landscape, and the scale of each tank gives the rooms an unusual sense of volume and quiet. Beyond the suites, common spaces unfold along the beachfront, including an open-air pool set against the waterline and a beach bar that occupies the space between the hotel and the sand. The restaurant draws on the agricultural character of the western Peloponnese, with a menu rooted in seasonal Greek ingredients and the region's culinary traditions. Meals are served in a setting that maintains the property's spare, material-driven aesthetic.

The western Peloponnese is one of Greece's less-traveled coastlines, a stretch of long sandy beaches, olive groves, and small agricultural towns far removed from the intensity of the Aegean islands. Ancient Olympia sits less than an hour inland. The region's pace is slower and more rural, shaped by farming and fishing rather than tourism. Kourouta's beach extends in a wide, unbroken arc, and the property sits directly on it, with the kind of unmediated access to the water that feels increasingly rare. This is not a manicured resort coastline. The landscape around Dexamenes is open, flat, and marked by the same honest simplicity that defines the architecture.

What lingers is the tension the property holds so well: between heaviness and light, between industrial memory and coastal stillness. The concrete never pretends to be anything other than what it was. The sea never stops pressing against it. Dexamenes does not soften this exchange. It simply makes a place where you can sit inside it, unhurried, watching the light shift across surfaces that have weathered a hundred years and are, somehow, just beginning.
