A seventeenth-century palace stands on a quiet stretch of the Centro Histórico, its weathered stone facade giving little away. Step through the entrance of Downtown Mexico and the building opens dramatically: a soaring courtyard framed by carved stone arches and wrapped in layers of colonial architecture, now animated by bold contemporary art, graphic tilework, and furnishings that feel distinctly of this city. The property occupies a restored noble residence that once belonged to the Counts of Miravalle, and the restoration honors the bones of the original structure while filling it with the energy of modern Mexico City.
Seventeen rooms are arranged across the upper floors, each one shaped by the building's centuries-old proportions. High ceilings, exposed stone walls, and tall windows define the spaces, while custom furnishings, concrete details, and locally sourced textiles keep the feeling current and warm. No two rooms are identical. Some look inward toward the central courtyard; others face the surrounding streetscape of one of the oldest neighborhoods in the Americas. The effect is intimate and unhurried, a counterpoint to the kinetic sprawl just beyond the front door.
The courtyard itself is the social heart of the property. Café de la Ciudad, the ground-floor restaurant and bar, serves Mexican-inflected dishes and cocktails beneath the open sky of the central patio, drawing both hotel guests and neighborhood regulars. The space shifts naturally from morning coffee to evening drinks, its energy shaped by the hour and the crowd. On the rooftop, Terraza Downtown offers another gathering point with panoramic views across the historic center, its skyline of cathedral domes, municipal buildings, and distant volcanoes visible on clear days. It is a place to linger with a mezcal as the light changes, watching the city from a vantage point few visitors find.
Downtown Mexico sits steps from the Zócalo, the vast central square that has been the civic and ceremonial core of the city since the Aztec empire. The Templo Mayor ruins, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and the dense grid of galleries, markets, and cantinas that define the Centro Histórico are all within walking distance. The neighborhood rewards those who explore on foot, and the hotel's location places you at its center without the noise of its busiest corridors. What stays with you is the building itself: the way centuries of history press gently against the present, the cool stone of the courtyard at midday, the sense that this is not a hotel designed to replicate Mexico City but one that belongs to it completely.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular thrill in walking through a 17th-century palace and feeling it still breathing — not preserved under glass, but genuinely inhabited, its high ceilings and traditional tiled floors holding centuries of stories without a trace of museum stiffness. Downtown Mexico sits two blocks from the Zócalo, which means the city's energy is right there, immediate and unfiltered, yet the moment you step inside, the scale shifts. Each room carries its own personality, with artisanal details that feel earned rather than curated for effect. The rooftop pool, improbably perched above Centro Histórico's dense urban grid, offers a strange and wonderful contrast — stillness suspended over the city's pulse. This is a place for travelers who want Mexico City raw and close, but who also appreciate returning to somewhere that feels quietly, genuinely beautiful.

Beautiful hotel & stay! LOVE that the hotel has shops and restaurant (make sure you make reservations). The only suggestion to hotel is to give guests more light options in room. It was quite dark. Other than that, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

A most delightful hotel and staff! Absolutely beautiful rooms, converted historic building. I was only there for one night of a layover and there was renovation of the gardens so if I was there longer, this may have bothered me, but for the time, it was no problem. Very very beautiful property and each room so elegantly appointed with a combo of modernist design and the historic brickwork. The entire property is exquisite. Loved the rooftop restaurant where staff were very kind and generous, lovely all around plus great views of the city center from there. Wish I had more time to spend here! Many thanks to all who made my stay so wonderful! It was my first time in CDMX in over 20 years so I appreciated the care, including the gentleman who made sure I had my lunch bag when departing so early in the morning! That sandwich carried me through my travels home! Muchas gracias!

This place was so beautiful—a real gem in the heart of the historic area of M. City. Our suite was so sexy—very much exceeded our expectations. My only criticism was the AC was loud (fan needs to be calibrated—sounded like it was rubbing something) and it didn’t seem to do much cooling. But, we kept the windows open to the outside and luckily it wasn’t too hot.
