There is a particular quality to arriving at the edge of Lake Wakatipu, where the water holds the reflection of The Remarkables and the air carries something ancient and clean. Eichardt's Private Hotel stands at this precise threshold, occupying a storied position on Queenstown's waterfront that dates back to the 1860s. Originally established as a wool store and trading post during the gold rush era, the building has been reimagined into one of New Zealand's most intimate luxury hotels, its heritage architecture now housing just five suites and a collection of lakefront apartments that feel more like a private residence than a conventional stay.
The suites are generous in both scale and detail. Rich fabrics, open fireplaces, deep-set windows framing the lake, and interiors that draw on a palette of warm neutrals and dark timbers give the rooms a sense of permanence and comfort that transcends seasonal trends. The Lakefront Residences extend the experience further, offering full kitchens, spacious living areas, and private balconies positioned directly over the water. Whether you occupy one of the heritage suites above the bar or settle into a residence with panoramic lake and mountain views, the accommodations feel collected rather than decorated, each space carrying a quiet authority.
Downstairs, The Grille by Eichardt's anchors the hotel's culinary identity with a menu rooted in premium New Zealand produce, the dining room oriented toward the lake with an atmosphere that shifts from relaxed lunches to candlelit evenings. Eichardt's Bar is the hotel's social heart and something of a Queenstown institution in its own right. Stone walls, leather seating, an open fire, and a cocktail list built around rare spirits make it the kind of place where a single drink stretches into an unhurried evening. In the warmer months, the waterfront terrace becomes one of the most coveted seats in town, the lake so close you could almost trail your fingers across its surface.
Queenstown itself unfolds just beyond the front door. The hotel sits directly on Marine Parade, steps from the town's boutiques, galleries, and restaurants, yet its position at the water's edge creates a feeling of remove. The surrounding region offers an extraordinary range of experiences, from jet boating on the Shotover River and bungy jumping at the Kawarau Bridge to wine tasting in the Gibbston Valley and heli-skiing in the surrounding Southern Alps. Eichardt's serves as a natural base for all of it, with a concierge team that arranges everything from scenic helicopter flights to private vineyard tours.
What lingers about Eichardt's Private Hotel is not any single detail but the rare convergence of place and intimacy. With so few rooms, the hotel operates at a scale that allows for genuine attentiveness. The fire is always lit. The bar always feels like yours. And the lake, visible from nearly every vantage point, provides a constant, grounding presence that makes even a short stay feel deeply restorative.

What we love about this stay
There's something about a hotel that sits right at the water's edge and actually earns it—where the lake isn't a backdrop but a presence you feel in every room. Eichardt's has the quiet confidence of a place that knows exactly what it is: intimate, considered, and deeply rooted in its lakefront setting on Wakatipu. The interiors feel handpicked rather than decorated, with textures and lighting that suggest someone cared about how a room feels at different hours, not just how it photographs. Central Otago's larder shows up beautifully at the table, particularly in the pairing of local lamb with regional Pinot Noir—a combination that feels less like a menu choice and more like an inevitability of place. What stays with you isn't any single grand gesture but the accumulation of small ones, and the way the Remarkables hold steady across the water, indifferent and magnificent.

We had an amazing stay at Eichardt’s Private Hotel! Firstly, there’s no better location as everywhere you need to go is a 3 minute walk away, and you have a lovely waterfront view right as you exit. The customer service is unparalleled as we had pleasant daily interactions with the staff. We had even left a few items in our room after check out, and the staff contacted us and shipped it to the address we requested free of charge. The daily snack refills were greatly appreciated by the kids, as well as the small evening treats. I cannot emphasize enough the fantastic customer service and experience here - you will truly feel like a five star guest!
