There is a particular stillness to a home that has been loved well. You feel it the moment you step through the door of Ett Hem, a 1910 Arts and Crafts townhouse on a quiet residential street in Stockholm's Lärkstaden neighborhood. The building was designed by architect Fredrik Dahlberg for a Swedish family, and over a century later it still carries the proportions and warmth of a private residence. Ilse Crawford, the British designer who shaped its interiors, preserved that domestic intimacy rather than converting it into something that merely resembles a hotel. Floors are original. Fireplaces are lit. Bookshelves hold volumes meant to be read. The result is a property with just twelve rooms where the boundary between guest and inhabitant dissolves almost immediately.
No two rooms are alike. Some face the garden, others look out over the rooftops of Östermalm. Furnishings mix mid-century Scandinavian pieces with inherited antiques, handwoven textiles, and contemporary art. Beds are dressed in fine linens, bathrooms finished in Carrara marble, and details like handmade tiles and copper fixtures give each space a sense of considered permanence. The scale is deliberately small. There is no lobby, no reception desk, no key cards. You are greeted as though arriving at a friend's home, because in many ways you are.
The kitchen sits at the heart of Ett Hem, functioning much as it would in a private house. Meals are prepared throughout the day and served wherever you prefer, whether at the long communal table, beside the fire in the sitting room, in the greenhouse, or in the enclosed courtyard garden. The cooking draws from Swedish tradition and seasonal ingredients, with menus that shift naturally rather than follow a fixed restaurant format. A glass of wine can appear at the right moment without asking. In warmer months, the garden becomes an extension of the living spaces, sheltered and green. A small spa in the lower level offers treatments in a setting that feels personal rather than programmatic, and a sauna provides a nod to Nordic ritual.
Lärkstaden is one of Stockholm's most coveted residential enclaves, set between the parklands of Humlegården and the cultural institutions of the city center. Strandvägen, the waterfront promenade, is a short walk south. The neighborhood's calm and its proximity to galleries, museums, and the archipelago ferry terminals make it an ideal base for exploring Stockholm at an unhurried pace.
What stays with you after Ett Hem is not any single detail but a rhythm. The crackle of a fire, a book left open on a side table, breakfast at whatever hour you choose, the quiet company of a house that treats you not as a guest to be impressed but as someone who belongs. It is a rare thing in hospitality, a place that feels genuinely domestic without ever feeling casual about the care behind it.

What we love about this stay
What strikes you first isn't the elegance — it's the quiet. Ett Hem operates on a different frequency than most hotels, one where the boundary between guest and resident blurs almost immediately. Set within Östermalm's composed streets, the property feels less like a boutique hotel and more like a well-loved home whose owner happens to have impeccable taste in Swedish design. Each room carries its own personality, mixing contemporary comforts with a craftsmanship that feels inherited rather than staged. The kitchen anchors daily life here — morning coffee and fresh bread drawing you in like a gentle domestic rhythm — and the courtyard shifts mood with the light, intimate enough for a quiet glass of wine as the city settles. It's the kind of place that rewards those who don't need spectacle, just substance, and it lingers in memory precisely because it never tried too hard.

The only disadvantage of this place is that it is very hard to leave. It’s a destination in itself. A wonderful and uniq Everything. Beautiful and unique. Lovely staff. A very special place.

One of the best hotels/guesthouses in the world. One of the best hotels we have stayed in. Unlike anything else. The hotel alone, a reason to come back to Stockholm. Not only beautiful design at every turn by Ilse Crawford, with so many nooks and places to rest and read books or relax. the generosity at every level is extraordinary – products and amenity, flowers, candles, fragrance & beauty. Nothing was too much of an ask of staff who were amazing at anticipating your every need.

Svårt att säga nåt annat än att det var toppen! Alla levererade..... från städ till mat till service. Maten var löjligt bra om jag ska nämna nåt extra positivt. Lite negativt att det tar så lång tid innan de öppnar grinden så man kan komma in.
