The door is small, almost modest, set into a golden facade on one of Europe's most celebrated pedestrian streets. Step through it and you enter a world that has been receiving guests since 1407, where hand-painted furniture, carved wood paneling, and centuries of Salzburg tradition have been preserved with uncommon devotion. Goldener Hirsch, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, is not simply a historic hotel. It is a living artifact of Austrian hospitality, occupying a cluster of medieval townhouses in the heart of the Getreidegasse, steps from Mozart's birthplace and the grand architecture of the Altstadt.
No two of the hotel's 70 rooms and suites are alike. Each is furnished with hand-crafted regional antiques, original artwork, and textiles that reflect centuries of local craft tradition. Wrought-iron fixtures, wooden ceiling beams, and ceramic stoves lend the spaces a warmth that feels inherited rather than designed. Many rooms look out over the Getreidegasse below or toward the fortress and spires that define Salzburg's skyline. The atmosphere is intimate and unhurried, shaped by the building's low ceilings, narrow corridors, and the quiet accumulation of detail that only a property of this age can possess.
The hotel's restaurant, Restaurant Goldener Hirsch, is a destination in its own right, known for refined Austrian cuisine served in a setting of rustic elegance. Expect regional ingredients treated with precision, from Tafelspitz to Salzburg's celebrated desserts, in dining rooms where carved wood and candlelight set a tone of convivial formality. The adjoining bar offers a more relaxed gathering point, where locals and hotel guests share cocktails and conversation beneath antler chandeliers and original oil paintings. Together, these spaces feel less like hotel amenities and more like the natural social quarters of a grand alpine household.
Salzburg itself unfolds just beyond the threshold. The Salzburg Festival, one of the world's most prestigious performing arts events, takes place each summer practically at the hotel's doorstep. The Hohensalzburg Fortress rises above the rooftops, the Salzach River curves through the valley, and the baroque churches and squares of the Old Town are reachable in minutes on foot. In winter, the city transforms under snow, with Christmas markets and alpine excursions within easy reach. The Goldener Hirsch has long served as a gathering place during the Festival season, its lobby and bar animated by musicians, artists, and patrons who return year after year.
What lingers is the feeling of being folded into something much older and more particular than a hotel stay. The creak of a centuries-old staircase, the scent of pine and beeswax, the sight of hand-painted floral motifs on a headboard that predates modern Austria itself. Goldener Hirsch does not perform heritage. It simply continues it, one guest at a time, with a warmth that feels both deeply Austrian and entirely its own.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular quiet confidence to this place — Alpine warmth rendered without kitsch, where rich wood and roaring fireplaces feel earned rather than staged. Tucked into the Wasatch Mountains with ski slopes practically at the door, Goldener Hirsch carries the rare quality of a mountain lodge that genuinely belongs to its landscape. The rooms lean into bespoke furnishings and views that make the peaks feel less like scenery and more like company. What lingers is the sense that the property doesn't compete with its surroundings — it defers to them, letting the mountain do the talking while offering just enough polish to remind you someone thoughtful is paying attention.

Beautiful property. I stayed at the newer wing. Rooms are outstanding. The lounge area is very inviting. Service top. Location perfect next to slopes. Valet service for skis very useful. Restaurant in the Inn top quality. Great bar as well. Overall one of the top 3 properties I have stayed in Deer Valley.

Stayed at the Hirsch for late Spring ski trip so pretty quiet time for the Deer Valley area. Room was clean and quite nice (old building) and staff was extremely nice - kind of think they were a little bored…. Super handy to Silver Lake lodge and lifts there. Rental shops and a small handful of stores (Coles, Christy’s, DV store) have what you need. Pool area was very cool, but small hot tub I imagine could get crowded in busier times

It would be nice to have some lower-cost dining options. We ended up going across the street to Chateaux for dinner several times.
