The building has stood here since 1881, facing the Adriatic from the waterfront promenade of Crikvenica, a Croatian seaside town that once drew the Austro-Hungarian elite for its mild winters and curative air. Hotel Albatross carries that lineage forward with a sense of pride that never tips into nostalgia. The facade is handsome and classical, its proportions shaped by an era when coastal hotels were built to endure. Inside, the restoration honors the original architecture while introducing a contemporary warmth, rooms dressed in clean lines and natural tones that let the sea light do most of the work.
Accommodations range across well-appointed rooms and suites, many offering direct views over the water and the forested hills that frame the bay. The interiors are thoughtful without being fussy, balancing comfort with a restrained coastal elegance. Mornings here tend to begin slowly, with breakfast setting the tone before the day opens up to the property's seaside position. The hotel's restaurant draws from the Kvarner region's rich culinary tradition, serving Adriatic seafood and Croatian dishes that reflect the surrounding landscape and its seasonal rhythms. There is a terrace where meals unfold within sight of the sea, the kind of setting where a long lunch becomes the afternoon's main event.
Crikvenica itself is a destination that rewards the unhurried traveler. The pebble beaches along the Riviera stretch in both directions from the hotel, and the surrounding coastline offers easy access to the islands of Krk and Cres by ferry. The town's promenade, lined with palms and Mediterranean pines, invites evening walks as the light softens over the water. It is a quieter corner of the Croatian coast, less crowded than the southern stretches, with a character shaped by fishing villages, local markets, and the particular clarity of the northern Adriatic.
Hotel Albatross occupies a rare position, both physically and atmospherically. It is a property where heritage is not performed but lived in, where the building's long history along this waterfront feels like an invitation rather than a museum piece. You settle into its rhythm quickly. The sound of the sea is close. The pace is yours to set. What stays with you is the sense of a place that has welcomed travelers for well over a century and still knows exactly how to do it.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular energy to a place that sits where history and the ocean meet, and this Asbury Park property carries it well—a sense of having been somewhere through many eras of the Shore without losing its footing. It feels like a hotel that knows exactly what it is: oceanfront, unabashedly Jersey, and comfortable in its blend of historic character and modern ease. The pool area, with its cabanas and Tiki Bar, has that lived-in vacation warmth where strangers clink glasses and nobody's in a rush. And being steps from the boardwalk means Asbury Park's creative, slightly offbeat spirit is always close. It's the kind of stay that rewards you for simply being present at the edge of the Atlantic.

Stayed on a Tuesday night with my fiancé just for a something fun to do in Asbury. We had a great time and absolutely loved hanging out by the pool. Great drinks, quiet, and relaxing. We’d definitely stay here again.
