The approach alone tells you something. A narrow road winds through Mediterranean scrub and umbrella pines before descending toward the rocky shoreline of Monte Argentario, where Hotel Il Pellicano clings to the cliffs as if it has always been part of the landscape. Built in the 1960s as a private hideaway for an American aviator and his aristocratic lover, the property still carries the atmosphere of that origin story: intimate, sun-drenched, unapologetically romantic. Terraces cascade toward the Tyrrhenian Sea in tiers of bougainvillea and weathered stone, and the architecture feels less designed than grown, shaped by decades of salt air and Southern Tuscan light.
Rooms and suites are spread across the hillside, many with private terraces that open directly to the water. The interiors balance mid-century warmth with a palette drawn from the surrounding coastline: terracotta, sea blue, bleached linen, and dark wood. Some suites include private gardens or plunge pools, while others frame the open sea through floor-to-ceiling windows. The overall effect is one of domesticity elevated rather than hotel formality imposed. You feel more like a guest in someone's extraordinarily beautiful home than a visitor checking into a resort.
At the heart of the property, the Michelin-starred restaurant Pelligrill offers refined coastal Italian cuisine, with a terrace that puts the sea directly at your feet during dinner service. Nearby, the more casual Fungo Bar serves cocktails and lighter fare with a convivial spirit that carries into the evening. The saltwater pool, carved into the rocks at the base of the cliff, remains one of the most iconic swimming spots on the Italian coast. A wooden platform extends over the water, and guests spend long afternoons moving between sun loungers and the sea below. The spa draws on the property's maritime setting, offering treatments that incorporate local botanicals and marine ingredients in a space designed for quiet withdrawal from the social energy of the pool deck and terraces above.
The Argentario peninsula itself is one of Tuscany's least developed coastal stretches, a landscape of wild headlands, hidden coves, and fishing villages that have resisted the kind of overdevelopment seen elsewhere along the Italian Riviera. Boats can be arranged for excursions to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri, and the surrounding countryside offers access to Maremma's wilder interior of thermal springs, Etruscan ruins, and small-production vineyards.
What lingers about Hotel Il Pellicano is the way time bends here. Mornings unfold slowly on sunlit stone. Afternoons dissolve at the water's edge. Evenings gather momentum around aperitivi as the cliffs turn gold and then violet. It is a place where glamour feels effortless because it was never manufactured, only inherited and gently maintained across six decades of keeping one of Italy's most beautiful secrets just barely open to the world.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular confidence to a place that hasn't reinvented itself since 1965 and doesn't need to. Il Pellicano carries its mid-century Italian glamour without irony — it's not referencing la dolce vita, it simply never stopped living it. The scale matters here: just 50 rooms cascading down a clifftop toward the Tyrrhenian Sea, which means the intimacy isn't a design choice so much as a structural fact. The saltwater pool carved directly into the rocks feels less like an amenity and more like something the landscape insisted on. Porto Ercole keeps this place slightly apart from the more telegraphed corners of Tuscany, and that remove is part of the spell — a hideaway that rewards those who already know.

A wow in Porto Ercole This was like an oasis in Porto Ercole - the most wonderful picturesque view from the hotel and it overview of the sea. the hotel graduated down the rockface and was a stunning location . We had our own room separated on the property with our own terrace. The Pool area was beautiful as well as the sea area. Staff were amazingly attentive and the two restaurants were stunning with great food in both. We absolutely loved this hotel and would come back agaIN
