Built in 1889 at the height of Colorado's silver boom, Hotel Jerome stands at the corner of Main and Mill streets with the confidence of a building that has never needed to reinvent itself. The facade is unmistakable: red brick and sandstone, arched windows, and a presence that anchors downtown Aspen the way a cathedral anchors a European square. Inside, the lobby sets the tone immediately. Oversized leather furnishings, antler chandeliers, and rich jewel tones create a warmth that feels distinctly Western and unapologetically grand. This is not a minimalist mountain retreat. It is a living monument to the town it helped build, now operating under the Auberge Resorts Collection with every detail sharpened to meet the expectations of a modern luxury traveler.
The 99 guest rooms and suites carry the hotel's Victorian bones forward without nostalgia becoming a constraint. Interiors balance period character with contemporary comfort, featuring custom furnishings, deep soaking tubs, and mountain views that shift with the seasons. The suites expand generously, some offering fireplaces and separate living areas suited to longer stays. For dining, Prospect is the hotel's signature restaurant, serving refined American cuisine with Rocky Mountain influences in a handsome, street-level space. The J-Bar, perhaps even more iconic than the hotel itself, has been Aspen's most storied gathering place for well over a century. Its pressed-tin ceiling and original bar back remain intact, and the room still draws a cross-section of locals and visitors who treat it less like a hotel bar and more like a town living room. The Aspen Bloody Mary, served here, has become something of a local institution in its own right.
Beyond the restaurants, the hotel offers a heated outdoor pool and terrace that serve as a social anchor during both ski season and summer months. A full-service spa provides treatments designed around mountain recovery and seasonal wellness. The property's concierge team operates as a gateway to Aspen's year-round landscape of experiences, from first tracks on Ajax to guided fly-fishing on the Roaring Fork River, summer hiking through fields of wildflowers, and access to the town's notable cultural programming, including the Aspen Music Festival and Aspen Ideas Festival.
Aspen itself is a place of contradictions that somehow resolve. A former mining camp turned world-class ski destination, it maintains a walkable, intimate downtown where you can reach galleries, boutiques, and restaurants within minutes of the hotel's front door. The surrounding Elk Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop in every direction, their peaks snow-covered well into spring. Hotel Jerome sits at the center of all of it, not on a mountainside or tucked into a valley, but right on Main Street, where the town's energy is most concentrated. It is the rare historic property that has never drifted from relevance. The building carries its 130-plus years lightly, and you feel it most clearly in the evenings, when the J-Bar fills and the lobby glows and the whole place hums with the particular vitality of a hotel that belongs exactly where it is.

What we love about this stay
Hotel Jerome carries something most luxury properties can't manufacture — a genuine sense of having been somewhere, of having hosted decades of Aspen's ski culture and social history within its walls. You feel it in the weight of the place, the way it holds both grandeur and warmth without tipping into pretension. The 93 rooms feel considered rather than formulaic, and the three restaurants speak to a kitchen that takes its sourcing seriously. What stays with you isn't any single amenity but the atmosphere of a hotel that belongs deeply to its town, one where the Rockies aren't just a backdrop but the entire reason the story exists.

We loved out stay in Jerome hotel. This is a beautiful iconic hotel and the staff were attentive and friendly. The atmosphere of the lobby and living room is warm and cozy. The only issue was that our room was facing the main street and we could hear cars and noise at night but overall we had a lovely time in the hotel.

If you really want to treat yourself, stay at the Jerome. The staff and service are excellent, and there is a lot of attention to detail here. The location in the heart of downtown Aspen means that just about everything is a short walk away. This has consistently been one of my favorite spots in the state.
