Hotel Motto occupies a storied corner of Vienna's sixth district, where the curve of Mariahilferstraße meets the creative pulse of the city's most walkable shopping boulevard. The building itself is a statement: a nineteenth-century Gründerzeit façade reimagined with bold, eclectic interiors that draw from Viennese salon culture and twentieth-century glamour without settling into nostalgia. Designed by Bernd Schlacher, the hotel's aesthetic is layered and theatrical, mixing jewel tones, vintage furniture, and contemporary art across its public spaces and 101 rooms and suites. Each floor carries its own palette and personality, and the rooms range from compact city studios to generous suites with views stretching across the rooftops toward the Museumsquartier and beyond.
The ground floor is anchored by Motto, the restaurant and bar that has long been one of Vienna's most beloved gathering places. Its menu moves between Viennese classics and Mediterranean-inflected dishes, served in an atmosphere that feels more neighborhood salon than hotel dining room. The bar extends the energy into the evening, drawing hotel guests and locals alike into a scene that is sociable without being performative. Upstairs, the rooftop terrace offers an entirely different register: an open-air perch above the city where cocktails and lighter fare are served against a panorama of church spires and imperial architecture. It is one of the few rooftop spaces in Vienna that feels genuinely integrated into the building's character rather than added as an afterthought.
The location places you within a few minutes' walk of the Museumsquartier, the Naschmarkt, and the cultural institutions lining the Ringstraße, yet the immediate neighborhood retains the energy of a residential quarter where independent shops, coffeehouses, and galleries set the rhythm. Mariahilferstraße itself has been largely pedestrianized, and the resulting streetscape makes Hotel Motto feel connected to the city in a way that more secluded properties cannot replicate. This is a hotel that wants you out in Vienna as much as it wants you in its rooms.
What stays with you after a night at Hotel Motto is the particular warmth of its contradictions: a building that is both unmistakably Viennese and stubbornly individual, a social space that feels intimate even when it's full, a design sensibility that borrows from the past without ever becoming a period piece. It is a hotel that understands Vienna not as a museum but as a living city, and it positions you right at its center.

What we love about this stay
There's something quietly compelling about a hotel that wears its Art Deco facade like a statement of intent on one of Vienna's busiest streets, then delivers an interior world that feels genuinely still. Hotel MOTTO sits right on the pulse of Mariahilfer Straße but manages to create rooms that feel sealed from the city's hum — soundproof windows doing the kind of invisible work that separates a good stay from a great one. The design threads history through without making a museum of it; sleek lines meet rich textures in a way that feels considered, not costume. Mornings at Chez Bernard set a tone that's more neighborhood restaurant than hotel buffet — a la carte, unhurried, lit by natural light that makes you want to linger. It's the kind of place that suits someone who wants Vienna's imperial weight and creative energy equally close at hand, without the property itself trying too hard to perform either.

Fabulous and memorable! The aesthetics of the hotel/rooms and the restaurant. Also the location is great with lots of hip locations around (Bistro Fantasy etc). I loved the cocktail/drinks offers going through the hotel corridor ✨
