A wrought-iron gate opens onto a world that feels borrowed from another continent. Korakia Pensione sits at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains in Palm Springs, a compound of whitewashed villas, keyhole archways, and hand-carved wooden doors that draws its visual language from Morocco and the Mediterranean. Originally built in the 1920s as the home of Scottish artist Gordon Coutts, the property retains the character of a private estate rather than a conventional hotel. Stone pathways wind through gardens thick with bougainvillea, citrus trees, and lavender. Fountains murmur in tiled courtyards. The light here, filtered through date palms and reflected off stucco walls, carries a warmth that makes the desert feel almost coastal.
The property spans two historic estates connected by lush grounds, offering a collection of bungalows, villas, and guest rooms, each individually appointed with Moroccan lanterns, kilim rugs, handwoven textiles, and wood-beamed ceilings. Fireplaces anchor many of the rooms, and some open onto private patios or balconies with views of the mountains. There are no televisions. The absence is deliberate, and it recalibrates the rhythm of a stay almost immediately. Two pools anchor the outdoor experience, one framed by the original Coutts estate and the other set within the adjacent property, both surrounded by daybeds and citrus-scented air. Mornings begin with a complimentary Mediterranean-inspired breakfast served outdoors, a spread of fresh fruit, pastries, yogurt, and strong coffee taken in the courtyard or poolside. Weekend evenings bring outdoor film screenings projected onto a whitewashed wall, a tradition that feels effortless and cinematic in equal measure.
Palm Springs unfolds just beyond the gate. The property sits within walking distance of Palm Canyon Drive's mid-century galleries, vintage shops, and restaurants, yet the compound's thick walls and dense gardens create a sense of complete separation. The Coachella Valley's iconic landscape, wind-sculpted mountains, vast sky, and golden desert floor, is ever-present from the property's terraces and upper rooms. Joshua Tree, the Aerial Tramway, and Indian Canyons are all within easy reach for those drawn to the surrounding terrain.
Korakia Pensione is not a place that announces itself. It seduces through texture, through the feel of hand-laid tile underfoot, through the scent of jasmine after sundown, through the particular silence that settles over the courtyards once the desert cools. It is a property that asks very little of its guests and, in doing so, gives back something uncommon: a stillness that feels genuinely earned.

What we love about this stay
There's something disorienting — in the best way — about stepping through a keyhole arch in Palm Springs and feeling like you've crossed a continent. Korakia Pensione doesn't try to be a resort; it operates more like a mood, one built from Moorish tiles, textured walls, courtyard fountains, and the faint scent of jasmine drifting through open air. Mornings here have a particular gravity — breakfast under olive trees, unhurried and warm, the kind of ritual that recalibrates your internal clock. The stone pool, the hand-carved Moroccan lounges, the outdoor film screenings under stars — none of it feels curated for spectacle. It feels curated for someone who actually wants to slow down, not just perform slowing down. It's a place that rewards lingering.

Beautiful, relaxing and unique getaway that transports you to another world It was such a unique and beautiful place to stay. The grounds were so quiet and relaxing with amazing service and all kinds of amenities and fun ways to enjoy our time. From the moment we arrived we were greeted warmly and as we walked to our room we were offered ice cold lavender towels! I didn't think I needed it, but it was so nice and an incredible start to a relaxing stay. Our room was clean and so cozy. The pool was a quiet and refreshing place to spend most of our time, and even offered a poolside movie in the evening surrounded by fire pits and candles. The breakfast in the morning was so good and every little detail was well thought out. We absolutely loved our stay and couldn't stop talking about it. Definitely found our favorite little gem getaway in Palm Springs for future retreats. Thanks Korakia for making it so special for our anniversary!
