A columned courtyard opens beneath a glass canopy, flooding the interior of an 18th-century palace with southern light. Palacio Solecio, a Small Luxury Hotel of the World, occupies a restored noble residence on Calle Granada, one of Málaga's most storied streets, just steps from the cathedral and the web of plazas that define the historic center. The architecture preserves the bones of its aristocratic past while moving confidently into the present. Original stone arches, ornamental ironwork, and tiled floors sit alongside contemporary furnishings and a palette that draws from the warm ochres and whites of the Andalusian coast. The central atrium, crowned by its retractable glass roof, serves as the hotel's gravitational center, a space that shifts character from a sunlit gathering place by day to something more intimate after dark.
The hotel's 68 rooms and suites are spread across the palace's upper floors, each drawing on the building's generous proportions. High ceilings, tall windows, and a restrained modern aesthetic give the rooms a sense of calm volume. Many overlook the rooftops and church towers of Málaga's centro histórico, while others face inward toward the courtyard below. Suites offer more expansive layouts with dedicated sitting areas, and throughout the property, the design balances heritage details with clean, understated comfort.
Dining at Palacio Solecio is anchored by Balausta, the hotel's signature restaurant, which celebrates Andalusian and Mediterranean cooking with a focus on local produce and seasonal ingredients. The courtyard itself doubles as a dining and cocktail space, where guests settle into long evenings under the glass atrium. A rooftop terrace adds another dimension, offering views across the city's skyline toward the Alcazaba and the port. It is the kind of place where a glass of local wine and the last light of the day become their own form of programming. The hotel also features a wellness area for guests seeking a quieter register, a space designed for unwinding after days spent walking Málaga's hills and cobblestone streets.
The location is central in every sense. The Picasso Museum, the Centre Pompidou Málaga, the Atarazanas market, and the Roman Theatre are all within a short walk. The Muelle Uno waterfront promenade and the beach at La Malagueta sit just beyond. Málaga has evolved rapidly into one of southern Spain's most compelling cultural cities, and Palacio Solecio places you at the intersection of that energy without ever feeling hurried. What lingers is the rhythm of the place itself: mornings in the courtyard with coffee and light, afternoons returning from the galleries to the cool of stone corridors, evenings that begin on the rooftop and drift slowly downward. It is a hotel that understands its city and mirrors its temperament, unhurried, generous, and quietly sure of itself.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular kind of quiet that happens when you pass through those grand arches — the lively hum of Málaga's historic center doesn't vanish so much as it settles, replaced by something more composed. Palacio Solecio feels like a place that understands the tension between a city full of energy and the need for a room that lets you exhale. The design threads contemporary taste through without erasing the sense of place; you feel Andalusia here, but it's interpreted rather than performed. Mornings on the terrace, where coffee and Mediterranean air share the same unhurried tempo, set a tone that's hard to shake. And the restaurant earns its reputation honestly — dishes rooted in local tradition, built on ingredients that taste like they didn't travel far. It's the kind of property that rewards you for staying close rather than rushing out, yet sits so deeply in the city's fabric that stepping out feels effortless. What lingers afterward isn't any single detail but the feeling that the place genuinely suited you.

A luxurious gem in the centre of Malaga A beautiful hotel with exceptional service. The location is brilliant as its right in the centre of the historic quarter. We had a room in the newer Solecio building on the attic floor and the room was spacious, bright and beautifully designed. All of the staff were excellent and always friendly. They even gifted us a free bottle of wine to celebrate my partner finishing the marathon which we very much appreciated! This, along with the lovely little touches of the welcome and leaving gifts made our holiday extra special.
