The building announces itself with the kind of quiet authority that only comes with age. Post House occupies a structure dating to 1837 on Charleston's Upper King Street, its bones holding nearly two centuries of Southern history beneath a careful restoration that feels neither precious nor overwrought. Step inside and the scale shifts immediately. The lobby is intimate, the hallways narrow in the way of buildings that predate modern architecture's love of open plans. Original heart pine floors, exposed brick, and a restrained palette of warm neutrals give the interiors a sense of permanence. This is a property with just 17 rooms and suites, each one individually configured to work within the building's historic framework, meaning no two are alike. Some feature fireplaces, others soaring ceilings or deep soaking tubs, and the furnishings draw from a mix of custom pieces and collected antiques that feel personal rather than staged.
Downstairs, the restaurant and bar form the social center of the property and carry much of its public identity. The dining room is an all-day affair rooted in Lowcountry cooking, with a menu that leans into seasonal ingredients and the region's culinary traditions without nostalgia. The bar, with its moody lighting and well-edited cocktail list, draws locals as readily as guests, blurring the line between neighborhood gathering place and hotel lounge. A courtyard offers outdoor seating beneath the canopy of a grand old tree, the kind of space that feels like it has always been here, long before anyone thought to set tables beneath it.
Upper King Street places Post House in one of Charleston's most walkable corridors, surrounded by independent shops, galleries, and restaurants that have helped define the city's creative resurgence over the past decade. The Historic District is minutes south on foot, and the energy of the neighborhood strikes a balance between residential calm and urban vitality that gives the hotel a sense of place beyond its own walls. Charleston's relationship with food, history, and architecture runs deep, and the property sits comfortably within that conversation rather than standing apart from it.
What lingers about Post House is the proportion of it all. Seventeen rooms. One restaurant. A courtyard. A bar where strangers become acquaintances over a well-made drink. There is no spa to retreat to, no rooftop pool competing for attention. The experience is compressed and deliberate, calibrated to the rhythm of a city that has always understood that generosity is not the same thing as excess. You leave with the feeling of having stayed somewhere that belongs exactly where it is.

What we love about this stay
There's something about a seven-room inn that forces intention — every detail has to earn its place, and here in Mount Pleasant, that restraint reads as quiet confidence rather than limitation. The polished wood floors and chandelier light set a tone that's warm without being precious, a place that understands Southern hospitality as something felt rather than performed. What lingers is the sense of scale: small enough that the bar becomes a genuine gathering point in the evening, intimate enough that breakfast built around local farmers' market ingredients feels personal rather than programmatic. It's a property that suits travelers who prefer belonging over being impressed, and whose best memories tend to come from the unhurried in-between moments.

I really loved this property. So much charm in this old house, but restored nicely with modern amenities. Having bikes available for use was perfect, and also fully enjoyed the bar, restaurant, and breakfast. Can't wait to come back!

Beautiful Inn! Beautifully restored inn with all the right touches. Perfect for a foodie getaway or a quiet respite. Just short drive to the beach and beautiful historic town. Service was fantastic. Both Anna and Annie were exceptional. We can’t wait to return!

It is a very small boutique inn. The restaurant is lively, light, and has excellent food and service. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The bed is so comfortable that I may have to purchase the type of mattress they use. A light breakfast is placed outside your room each morning. The location is perfect.
