The road climbs through the Aravalli Hills before the palace reveals itself, perched above the village of Delwara like something the landscape decided to keep. RAAS Devigarh is an 18th-century fortress-palace, once the ruling seat of the Delwara chieftains, now restored into a hotel of extraordinary restraint. The architecture is monumental in the way only Rajasthani palaces can be, with massive ramparts, layered courtyards, and marble facades carved with the geometric precision of Mewar craftsmanship. But the interiors have been stripped to a kind of luminous minimalism. White marble, clean surfaces, and a deliberate absence of ornamental clutter give the spaces a meditative stillness that feels almost radical against the centuries of history embedded in the walls.
The thirty-nine suites are each distinct in layout, carved from the palace's original chambers, turrets, and pavilions. Expect soaring ceilings, arched alcoves, semi-precious stone inlays, and windows that frame the valley below in ways that feel both ancient and utterly contemporary. Some suites include private terraces or plunge pools tucked into the fortress walls. The design philosophy throughout is one of restraint: the rooms let the original architecture speak, furnished with custom pieces that complement rather than compete with the stonework and light. Garden suites sit within the palace grounds, offering a slightly different rhythm with direct access to the landscaped terraces.
Dining at Devigarh draws from the surrounding landscape and the traditions of Rajasthani cuisine. The restaurant serves meals that reflect the region's culinary heritage, prepared with locally sourced ingredients and presented with care. Meals can be arranged in various settings across the property, from the courtyard to the ramparts, depending on the occasion and the hour. The spa offers treatments rooted in Ayurvedic and wellness traditions, set within the lower levels of the palace where the thick walls create a natural coolness. A swimming pool occupies one of the terraced levels, its stillness mirroring the valley views that stretch toward the distant hills. Yoga sessions and guided excursions into the surrounding countryside are available for guests looking to engage more deeply with the region.
Devigarh sits in the Aravalli range, roughly an hour northeast of Udaipur, placing it within reach of Rajasthan's most celebrated city while maintaining a seclusion that feels complete. The village of Delwara unfolds at the base of the hill, and the surrounding landscape is one of dry scrub, rocky ridgelines, and a quality of light that shifts dramatically from morning gold to evening amber. Excursions to nearby temples, step wells, and rural communities offer a window into the living culture of Mewar.
What stays with you is the tension at the heart of the place. The fortress commands its hilltop with the authority of centuries, yet inside, the experience is one of quietness and space. RAAS Devigarh does not ask you to marvel at its history so much as inhabit it, moving through rooms where the weight of Rajasthani royalty has been translated into something lighter, more personal, and entirely present.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular tension at RAAS Devigarh that few heritage properties manage — the feeling that an 18th-century palace has been restored not to freeze it in time, but to let it breathe again. Intricate murals sit alongside modern design touches without apology, and the effect is less museum, more living house with exceptional bones. The jasmine-scented air and the Aravalli Hills pressing in from every angle remind you this is deeply, unmistakably Rajasthan, yet nothing here feels like a theme. It's the kind of place that suits travelers who want history without performance, quietude without austerity, and a dining room where Rajasthani flavors arrive with genuine craft rather than spectacle. What stays with you isn't any single grand gesture — it's the accumulated stillness of the place, the way the old walls hold the cool, and the sense that luxury here was always the architecture itself.
