What we love about this stay
Ask for a Prestige Suite overlooking Place Vendôme—the late-afternoon light through those floor-to-ceiling windows turns the gilded moldings into something almost theatrical, and it's worth being in the room for. Don't bother with dinner reservations elsewhere your first night; head straight to Bar Hemingway, arrive before 8pm to claim a seat at the bar itself, and let Colin mix you a Serendipity. It's the kind of drink that sets the tone for everything after. The pool is best swum early morning when you'll have that frescoed ceiling entirely to yourself—a rare silence in central Paris. One practical note: book spa treatments at least a week out, especially weekends. The Ritz rewards those who treat it not as a trophy stay but as a place to slow down inside.

This property is very expensive. Let's get that out of the way right off. But my wife and I were super-impressed by the friendly staff. A gentleman escorted us around the hotel while other folks brought our bags to the room. Very nice attendant in the spa. The staff was gracious enough to speak to my wife in French, as she preferred. The room was full of super-nice extras, e.g., lots of electrical sockets (which is often not the case in historical hotels), rich carpeting, thoughtful lighting, beautiful bathroom. There was a ring holder in the bathroom, a great idea we hadn't seen before. My wife went to the spa twice (evening and morning). Nobody was angling for a tip. Indeed, when we ate dinner at the Bar Vendome, there was nothing on the bill to add a tip. Though, yes, Bar Vendome is also very expensive. It was a big splurge, but we enjoyed it completely.
