The approach alone tells you something. The road climbs through the Bernese Oberland, past timber-framed farmhouses and snow-dusted pastures, until the village of Gstaad appears with its peculiar balance of discretion and worldliness. The Alpina Gstaad sits just above it all, a contemporary interpretation of the grand alpine hotel built with the materials and craftsmanship of the region. Hand-cut stone, aged timber, and artisan metalwork give the building a sense of permanence, as though it grew from the mountainside rather than being placed upon it. Inside, the scale is generous but the atmosphere resists formality. Vast windows frame the Saanenland valley, and interiors layer alpine tradition with a modern hand, mixing cowhide, rich wood paneling, and open fireplaces with clean contemporary lines.
Sixty-six rooms and suites occupy the upper floors, each finished with warm oak, natural stone, and handcrafted details that reinforce the sense of a private mountain residence rather than a conventional hotel. Many open onto balconies facing the peaks of the Bernese Alps. Beyond the rooms, the property unfolds across several distinct experiences. The restaurant SOMMET offers refined dining rooted in seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, while the Swiss Stübli channels a more traditional alpine mood with classic regional cooking served amid carved wood and candlelight. For something more relaxed, the lobby lounge and bar provide a gathering point through the day, transitioning from afternoon tea to evening cocktails against a backdrop of mountain views. In warmer months, terraces extend the dining and social spaces outdoors.
The Six Senses Spa occupies its own wing, stretching across nearly 2,000 square metres and offering an extensive menu of holistic treatments alongside a heated indoor swimming pool, outdoor saltwater pool, Finnish sauna, steam rooms, and a private hammam. A fully equipped fitness centre and yoga studio round out the wellness offering, while a dedicated beauty salon adds a more indulgent layer. During winter, the hotel's proximity to Gstaad's ski areas makes it a natural base for days on the slopes, with concierge services to arrange everything from lift passes to private instruction. Summer shifts the rhythm toward hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the surrounding alpine meadows. The village itself, long favored by a discreet international set, offers galleries, boutiques, and the cultural programming of events like the Menuhin Festival.
What lingers about The Alpina Gstaad is its particular calibration of scale and intimacy. The property carries the infrastructure of a grand hotel, the wellness depth of a destination spa, and the dining range of a small collection of restaurants, yet it maintains the atmosphere of a private mountain lodge where the fire is always lit and the valley always in view.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular tension at The Alpina Gstaad that makes it linger in your mind — the weight of traditional Swiss architecture held in honest conversation with a clean, contemporary sensibility. It doesn't try to be a mountain lodge, and it doesn't pretend the mountains aren't there. The fireplace in the lobby, the warmth of the wine bar nearby, the way the whole place seems calibrated to that specific altitude quietness — it all registers as earned rather than staged. You feel the proximity of snow-capped peaks from your balcony without the property ever shouting about it. And then there's the unlikely pairing of a Japanese restaurant alongside a proper Swiss Stübli, which tells you something about the confidence of the place. The Six Senses Spa deepens the stillness rather than interrupting it. What stays with you isn't any single detail but the cumulative sense that the valley outside and the world inside are breathing at the same pace.
