The lobby announces it immediately. Soaring ceilings, dramatic drapery, and walls lined with political cartoons spanning decades of California statecraft set a tone that is equal parts civic gravitas and irreverent wit. The Citizen Hotel occupies a 1926 Cal Western Life building in downtown Sacramento, just steps from the State Capitol, and its transformation into a boutique hotel has preserved the architecture's original bones while layering in a personality that feels entirely its own. Dark woods, rich textures, and carefully curated artwork create interiors that read more like a private metropolitan club than a conventional luxury hotel.
The 198 rooms and suites carry the same spirit of contrast. Expect tall windows that flood spaces with natural light, crisp linens against deep accent tones, and furnishings that balance period character with clean, contemporary lines. Many rooms look out over the tree-lined streets of midtown Sacramento or toward the Capitol dome, grounding the stay in the city's distinctive energy. The suites expand generously, offering sitting areas suited to lingering mornings or late-night conversation.
Grange Restaurant & Bar anchors the ground floor with a farm-to-fork ethos that mirrors Sacramento's identity as a capital of California agriculture. The menu draws from the Central Valley's extraordinary bounty, and the bar program complements it with craft cocktails and a wine list that leans heavily into the surrounding appellations. The dining room itself feels like a scene, with high ceilings and an atmosphere that draws both hotel guests and locals in equal measure. Beyond the restaurant, the hotel's public spaces invite a certain kind of social fluency, with lobby seating arranged for conversation and event spaces that have become go-to venues for gatherings across the city.
Sacramento rewards those who explore on foot from here. The Capitol building is a short walk away, and the surrounding grid of midtown streets is filled with independent restaurants, galleries, and coffee shops that reflect the city's evolving creative culture. The proximity to the Sacramento River and Old Sacramento adds historical texture, while the broader region's access to wine country, the Delta, and the Sierra Nevada foothills makes The Citizen Hotel a natural base for travelers interested in more than just the city itself. What stays with you is the hotel's distinctive attitude, a place that takes its setting seriously without ever taking itself too seriously, and that treats Sacramento not as a stopover but as a destination worth savoring.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular quality to a hotel that wears its city's history without performing it, and The Citizen gets that balance right. The soaring lobby ceilings and ornate details feel genuinely rooted in Sacramento's civic grandeur rather than borrowed from a mood board, and the rooms carry that thread forward with a design sensibility that's modern but never forgetful. What stays with you is the proximity—not just physical, though the State Capitol is practically at your doorstep—but the sense that the building itself is part of the city's ongoing story. The restaurant's commitment to local farms gives dinner a regional specificity that matters, and the bar has that low-hum energy where strangers end up in easy conversation. It's a property for people who want to feel the texture of a place, not just sleep in it.

The historical design, especially the old political cartoons on the wals

It was modern and upscale in a central location, and had a good price for our stay.

The style of the hotel is lovely and so are the room fixtures. Very cool, very pretty and felt clean.

Our main reason for the trip had to so with medical care for our dog, so we wanted a dog friendly hotel, and we definitely found it with the Citizen Hotel. No size/weight restrictions, and a small park across the street where we would walk the dog. Staff were also very responsive when the TV itself did not respond to five different remote controls, and the valet parking, though pricey, was very fast and efficient.
