The granite façade of the Charles Street Jail stood for more than a century as one of Boston's most recognizable landmarks, its octagonal rotunda and soaring catwalks a monument to nineteenth-century civic architecture. Today, The Liberty Hotel inhabits that same structure with a different purpose entirely. You enter through the original jail doors into a lobby that rises nearly ninety feet overhead, where the building's iconic rotunda has been preserved as a dramatic central atrium. The scale is immediate and unmistakable. Original ironwork, exposed brick, and arched windows coexist with contemporary furnishings and a social energy that feels distinctly Boston.
The hotel's 298 rooms span both the preserved historic building and a modern tower addition. In the original jailhouse wing, rooms retain architectural details like arched windows and thick granite walls, while the contemporary tower offers floor-to-ceiling glass and views across the Charles River, Beacon Hill, or the city skyline. The interplay between old and new runs throughout the property, never quite letting you forget where you are. Corridors trace paths that once served a very different function, and the building's bones remain visible in ways that feel honest rather than theatrical.
Dining and drinking are woven into the hotel's public life with notable range. CLINK. occupies a ground-floor space framed by original jail cell doors, offering a brasserie-style menu in a setting that leans into the building's history with wit rather than costume. Alibi, set in what was once the actual drunk tank, operates as a cocktail lounge where exposed brick and iron bars serve as atmospheric backdrop rather than gimmick. The Liberty Bar, positioned beneath the soaring rotunda, anchors the lobby as a gathering point that draws hotel guests and locals alike. Seasonal programming and events bring additional energy, making the ground floor feel less like a hotel lobby and more like a living room for the neighborhood.
Location is one of The Liberty Hotel's strongest cards. Situated at the base of Beacon Hill where the neighborhood meets the Charles River Esplanade, you're steps from the walking and cycling paths along the water and a short walk from Massachusetts General Hospital, Cambridge Street, and the heart of one of Boston's most coveted residential neighborhoods. The cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill climb upward just beyond the hotel's entrance, and the Back Bay, Public Garden, and downtown are all within easy reach.
What stays with you after The Liberty Hotel is the unlikely warmth of the place. A building designed to confine has become one of Boston's most open and social gathering points. The architecture commands attention without demanding reverence, and the hotel's personality runs closer to spirited than solemn. It is a property that takes its history seriously and itself not too much at all.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular tension here that works — an 1851 landmark building at the foot of Beacon Hill that somehow feels neither museumlike nor overly slick. The soaring ceilings and original architectural details carry genuine weight, but the rooms lean contemporary and comfortable rather than reverential. You sense Boston's history in the bones of the place without being lectured by it. The dining spaces each have their own personality: Scampo's bold Italian energy feels entirely different from Alibi's cocktail-bar intrigue, which trades on the building's own past in ways that feel earned rather than gimmicky. It's a hotel for people who want to walk out the door onto Beacon Hill's cobblestones and come back to something that feels warm and specific — not a generic luxury landing pad, but a place with a real story embedded in its walls.
