The drive up to The Madrona is a study in anticipation. A canopy of heritage trees lines the path toward a striking Victorian mansion set on eight wooded acres, its architecture a relic of the 1880s that has been reimagined with the kind of design intelligence that honors history without being held hostage by it. The property sits on a gentle rise in Healdsburg, surrounded by some of Sonoma County's most celebrated vineyards, yet the grounds themselves feel private and self-contained, a world defined by towering madrone trees, terraced gardens, and the quiet confidence of a place that has been thoughtfully restored.
The Madrona's accommodations span the original mansion and a collection of cottages and suites tucked across the estate. Rooms reflect a layered aesthetic that balances period details with modern comfort. Expect wide-plank floors, freestanding soaking tubs, fine linens, and fireplaces in many rooms, all appointed with a restraint that lets the architecture breathe. Some suites offer private decks overlooking the gardens and surrounding woodland, while cottage rooms provide a more secluded experience among the property's mature landscaping. The variety of room types means the hotel serves couples seeking intimacy and small groups looking for a shared base equally well.
Dining at The Madrona is anchored by its destination restaurant, where the kitchen draws deeply from the agricultural abundance of Sonoma County. Menus are seasonal and ingredient-driven, shaped by relationships with local farms and producers. The dining room itself occupies a beautifully restored space within the mansion, and meals here carry a sense of occasion without formality. Beyond the restaurant, the property's grounds invite lingering. A heated outdoor pool sits among the gardens, offering a rare combination of seclusion and open sky. Walking paths wind through the estate, and the overall tempo of the property encourages long mornings and unhurried afternoons.
Healdsburg's town plaza is just a short walk from the estate, placing guests within easy reach of tasting rooms, boutiques, and the town's lively culinary scene. Yet The Madrona's hillside setting creates a genuine sense of remove, a quality that becomes more apparent with each hour spent on the grounds. The property operates at the intersection of heritage and reinvention, a place where the patina of a 19th-century estate meets a contemporary sensibility that feels neither nostalgic nor contrived. What lingers after a stay is the rhythm of the place itself, the way mornings unfold slowly on a shaded porch, the way an evening meal in the mansion feels both celebratory and deeply familiar.

What we love about this stay
Request one of the Victorian-era rooms facing the garden — the morning light through those original windows is worth every penny over the newer builds. At dinner, skip the indoor dining room and ask for a table in the garden; the kitchen sends out different energy when you're under those trees, and the sommelier tends to linger longer with pours from hyper-local Healdsburg producers you won't find elsewhere. Book the restaurant for the earlier seating — by golden hour, that garden is doing something extraordinary. Afterward, take your glass to the pool deck and stay through sunset. The property goes quiet in a way that makes Sonoma feel like it belongs entirely to you.

The Madrona in Healdsburg is easily one of the nicest places we’ve ever stayed. We had a room in the Coach House - absolutely stunning. Turndown service, proper attention to detail, and even the manager came over to suggest some brilliant local spots to eat. They offered a car into town if we needed it too. Honestly, just an incredible experience from start to finish.

Hotel Madrona is truly one of a kind. Every corner of this hotel showcases a fabulous and unique design. The garden is absolutely divine, especially with the beautiful music playing in the background—it creates a magical atmosphere. While the food at the restaurant could use some improvement, the overall experience more than makes up for it. I will definitely be returning to stay at this stunning hotel again.
