A narrow façade on a residential street in Akasaka gives almost nothing away. Step inside The Screen and the restraint of the exterior dissolves into something altogether more expressive. This is a thirteen-room hotel where every guest room has been conceived by a different designer or artist, each one a discrete world with its own palette, materials, and spatial logic. The lobby glows with shifting projections and an atmosphere that feels closer to a gallery opening than a hotel check-in. It is small by design, intimate by philosophy, and entirely unconcerned with convention.
Each of the thirteen rooms operates as an independent creative statement. Some lean into minimalism, others into saturated color or textural contrast. The variety is not decorative novelty but a genuine curatorial commitment, one that means no two stays at the property feel the same. Returning guests can choose a completely different aesthetic world each visit. Rooms are compact in the way that central Tokyo demands, but the design intelligence makes each one feel considered rather than constrained. The ground-floor bar and lounge serve as the hotel's social spine, a moody, low-lit space where guests settle in after dark.
The location places you in Akasaka, a district that sits between the political gravity of Nagatacho and the nightlife energy of Roppongi, yet maintains its own quieter rhythm. The surrounding streets hold a mix of small restaurants, izakayas, and temple grounds. Akasaka-mitsuke Station is moments away, connecting you efficiently to Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ginza, and beyond. It is a neighborhood that rewards evening walks and unhurried meals, one where Tokyo's intensity softens just enough to breathe.
The Screen does not chase scale or amenity lists. What it offers instead is authorship. Every surface, every material choice, every lighting decision in those thirteen rooms reflects an individual creative voice rather than a corporate standard. For travelers who see a hotel room as more than a place to sleep, who want the space itself to provoke something, this is a rare proposition in a city of thousands of hotels. You leave with the sense that you did not simply stay somewhere in Tokyo but inhabited a very specific vision of it.

What we love about this stay
The Screen feels like a quiet declaration — a boutique hotel in the thick of Kyoto that refuses to blend in yet never shouts. Each room is individually decorated, which gives the whole place a sense of personal curation rather than corporate consistency. It's the kind of property where contemporary design and the weight of an ancient city coexist without either one winning. You sense Kyoto's presence not through heavy-handed tradition but through a certain restraint in the atmosphere. The rooftop terrace puts you above the city in a way that feels earned, not performative. Grab one of the hotel's bicycles and you're immediately absorbed into the neighborhood around Kawaramachi Street, which is exactly the point — this is a hotel that wants you out in the city as much as it wants you back. It suits the traveler who'd rather discover than be guided, and it stays with you precisely because it doesn't try too hard to.

Great boutique hotel! Fabulous quiet location which was close to public transportation. Taxis were also easily accessible. Staff was attentive. Breakfast were excellent and accommodated several food allergies. Each room is designed by a different decorator and was unique. Morning runs along the river were a great way to start the day!

The Screen, Kyoto We had a great time at the screen in Kyoto. The staff was very friendly and our check-in/check-out was seemless. They even packed us a to-go box on our final day when we had to leave early morning. Tip: all their suites have different designs. The staff was accomodating for us to try another suite, so we got to experience different designs. Much appreciated!
