TOURISTS sits on the banks of the Deerfield River in North Adams, Massachusetts, a former 1960s motor lodge reimagined into something quietly radical. The bones of the original roadside motel are still visible in the low-slung architecture and the way the building hugs the riverbank, but every surface has been rethought with an artist's sensibility and a designer's precision. Wood-paneled walls, custom furnishings, and a warm material palette give the interiors a sense of handmade intimacy, while floor-to-ceiling windows in many rooms frame the river and the surrounding mountains of the northern Berkshires. The result is a property that feels both familiar and entirely its own, a place that honors the democratic spirit of the American road trip while elevating it into something worth lingering over.
The 48 rooms are arranged across the original motel footprint, each one oriented toward the river. Interiors are spare but considered, with custom-built beds, locally sourced textiles, and details that reward attention. Some rooms open directly onto shared porches and the riverfront lawn, blurring the line between private retreat and communal gathering. The overall effect is less boutique hotel and more creative compound, a place where the architecture encourages you to step outside and engage with the landscape. A seasonal outdoor pool offers a place to settle into the afternoon sun, and the property's public spaces, including a fire pit area along the river, invite the kind of unstructured time that the region seems to demand.
The on-site restaurant and bar anchor the social life of the property with a menu rooted in seasonal, locally driven cooking. Dining here feels relaxed and convivial, whether you're eating inside or out on the terrace with the sound of the river below. The bar program matches the food in its attention to craft and locality, and the whole operation carries the same ethos as the rooms: thoughtful without being precious, generous without excess.
North Adams is a small former mill town that has become one of New England's most compelling cultural destinations, largely due to the presence of MASS MoCA, one of the largest contemporary art museums in the country, located just minutes from the property. The surrounding landscape offers hiking along the Appalachian Trail, swimming holes, and the kind of rural New England beauty that shifts dramatically with the seasons. TOURISTS draws energy from this context, positioning itself as both a base for exploration and a destination in its own right.
What stays with you is the particular rhythm the property creates. Mornings by the river, afternoons drifting between the pool and a gallery visit, evenings gathered around good food and firelight. TOURISTS doesn't ask you to perform relaxation or aspire to someone else's version of luxury. It simply offers a well-made place in a beautiful setting and trusts you to find your own way through it.

What we love about this stay
Tourists sits in that rare space where architectural ambition meets genuine warmth—a property in North Adams that feels both intentional and unhurried. The design walks a line between rustic and contemporary without defaulting to either, and you sense that every choice was made by people who actually care about how a room feels, not just how it photographs. There's a quiet confidence here, rooted in its proximity to the Berkshires' arts scene and landscape, that lets the setting do much of the work. Rooms look out onto garden or mountain views, and the grounds carry a kind of sensory weight—earth, bloom, open air—that recalibrates you without asking permission. It's a place that suits the traveler who wants both stimulation and stillness, and who understands that the best stays are the ones that don't try to explain themselves.

Awesome design, top-notch room and great staff! My husband and I were lucky enough to get a night this week for a short vacation. What a wonderful, understated gem of a hotel/motor inn. The decor and architecture are serene and so comfortable both inside and out. The room was so clean, the bed wonderfully comfortable and the view to the woods beautiful. The grounds are awesome and we used the beatufiul pool area and the terrace extensively. They had a wonderful BBQ for the guests. Everyone was extremely friendly and efficient. I can't say enough. We will definitely be back
