The approach itself is a kind of ceremony. The road climbs through the Schanfigg valley, switching back through dense pine forest before Arosa reveals itself at the top, a high alpine village cradled by peaks on nearly every side. Tschuggen Grand Hotel stands at the edge of this landscape, its presence both commanding and deeply integrated into the mountain setting. The original structure carries the weight of a storied Swiss grand hotel, with its warm wood interiors and classic alpine proportions, while the property's defining architectural gesture belongs to Mario Botta. His sail-shaped glass and steel structures rise from the hillside like luminous fins, channeling daylight into the subterranean Tschuggen Bergoase spa below. It is one of the most striking wellness spaces in the Alps, and it announces, without a word, that this is not a conventional mountain retreat.
The Bergoase spa spans over 5,000 square meters across multiple levels carved into the granite hillside. Indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam baths, and treatment rooms unfold beneath Botta's iconic light trees, which flood the space with natural alpine light even deep within the rock. The experience moves between water, warmth, and mountain air with a quiet grandeur that feels both modern and elemental. Beyond the spa, the hotel offers direct access to the Arosa ski area via its own private mountain railway, the Tschuggen Express, a funicular that carries guests from the hotel's lower level directly to the slopes. In summer, those same mountains become a network of hiking and biking trails, and the hotel's parklike grounds open into terraces and gardens facing the surrounding peaks.
Dining across the property spans several distinct experiences. The gourmet restaurant, La Vetta, offers refined alpine cuisine in an intimate setting with panoramic mountain views. Botta's, named for the architect himself, serves Italian-inspired dishes in a space that reflects his design sensibility. For more relaxed meals, the hotel's main restaurant and its sun terrace provide classic Swiss hospitality against a backdrop of open sky and forested slopes. Evenings often settle into the hotel bar or the cigar lounge, both spaces that carry the warmth of a well-kept alpine institution.
Rooms and suites blend traditional Swiss craftsmanship with contemporary comfort. Many feature private balconies looking out across the valley or toward the Weisshorn, with interiors finished in natural wood and stone. The scale of the hotel allows for a range of accommodations, from well-appointed doubles to expansive suites with generous living areas. Throughout, the service carries the precision and warmth that defines the best of Swiss hospitality, unhurried but deeply attentive. Tschuggen Grand Hotel holds a rare position in the alpine landscape. It is a property where architectural ambition, wellness culture, and mountain tradition converge without competing. The rhythm here follows the seasons and the altitude, and what stays with you long after departure is the particular quality of light, the silence of snow or summer meadow, and the sense of having been somewhere genuinely apart.

What we love about this stay
What gets you here is the location — steps from Arosa's cable cars, the Alps practically leaning into the property — but what keeps you is something harder to name. Each room is individually designed, and not in that token boutique way; you genuinely feel like someone thought about how a particular space should feel rather than replicating a template. There's a design confidence that lets rustic and modern coexist without either winning. After a day on the slopes or trails, the lounge with its fireplace has the kind of warmth that makes you stay longer than you planned, wine in hand, conversation easy. It's a place that earns the word 'home' in its name — not by being casual, but by feeling considered.

The most wonderful experience. The team are so wonderful. Charlene is an absolute angel. I managed to get injured on a hike (as I always. do) and she got me to the doctor, picked me up and kept checking in. The whole team was wonderful, a special thanks to Fabio and Robert in the restaurant for the friendliness and chats. Make sure you do the squirrel walk, the lovely gent on the front desk (name forgotten sorry) can show you the way. Can’t wait to go back.
