The road narrows through olive groves and umbrella pines before the estate reveals itself: a cluster of centuries-old buildings arranged across fifty acres of Tuscan hillside, their ochre facades softened by time and framed by gardens that have been growing here for generations. Villa Lena is a nineteenth-century estate reimagined as a place where hospitality, contemporary art, and the rhythms of the land exist in close conversation. The main villa, once the country residence of opera singer Marietta Brambilla, anchors the property with its frescoed interiors, while restored farmhouses and outbuildings scattered across the grounds create a sense of intimate scale within a genuinely expansive landscape.
Accommodations range across the estate's historic structures, each with its own character. Rooms in the main villa carry original architectural details, including painted ceilings and terracotta floors, while converted farmhouse suites and apartments offer more independent, rustic-modern spaces suited to longer stays or families. The interiors are warm and unadorned in the best sense, mixing vintage furnishings with contemporary art and natural materials. Nothing feels staged. The design throughout leans into the estate's inherited textures rather than smoothing them away, and site-specific artworks from past residents appear in unexpected corners, on garden walls, and along woodland paths.
Days here settle into an unhurried pattern shaped by the property's own offerings and the surrounding landscape. There is a swimming pool set among the olive trees, its position opening onto wide views of the rolling hills toward Volterra. The estate's restaurant serves meals rooted in Tuscan cooking, drawing on produce from the on-site organic garden and working farm. Communal dinners and seasonal gatherings form part of the social fabric, and the property's artist residency program means the guest list often includes painters, musicians, writers, and designers in the middle of their own creative work. Yoga, workshops, and cultural programming shift with the seasons, creating a calendar that changes shape throughout the year.
Beyond the property, the landscape is quintessential central Tuscany. The medieval village of Palaia sits nearby, and the towns of San Miniato, Volterra, and Pisa are all within reach. But the estate's own acreage, with its forests, meadows, and working agricultural land, is expansive enough that many guests find little reason to leave. There is a particular quality to the light here in late afternoon, when the hills deepen into amber and the air carries the scent of rosemary and warm stone.
What lingers about Villa Lena is the sense that it has not been built toward a concept but grown from a place. The art, the food, the landscape, and the company of strangers all feel like natural extensions of the estate itself. It is a property that asks very little of its guests except presence, and in return offers the rare luxury of time that feels genuinely your own.

What we love about this stay
Villa Lena operates on a frequency that's hard to find — part working farm, part creative retreat, part Tuscan daydream, but never quite reducible to any single label. The cypress-lined approach sets the tone: this is a place that earns its atmosphere rather than performing it. Rooms are deliberately understated, dressed in earthy tones and soft textures that let the landscape do the talking through every window. What distinguishes it is the quiet tension between connectivity and surrender — Wi-Fi is there if you want it, but the rosemary-scented air and rolling hills make a compelling case for forgetting your phone entirely. The restaurant's commitment to locally sourced ingredients feels honest rather than aspirational, and evenings tend to gather naturally around the lounges, where conversation drifts toward art and the day's small discoveries. It's the kind of place that suits people who don't need luxury announced to them — who'd rather feel it in the stillness of a Tuscan night.

Beautiful, tastefully furnished rooms. Lots of modern artwork and design furniture across the hotel. Very nice staff. Located on a hill, quite remote, surrounded by nature. Convenient EV charging on site. Pool, historic villa, free rental bikes, walks. The hotel’s restaurant/osteria offers nice dishes with locally grown vegetables, homemade breakfast, yet the service needs improvement. Pool a bit small and food served outside of dinner/lunch hours could be improved. Overall a very nice stay.

A beautiful, relaxing property with incredibly kind and professional staff. Villa Lena has a character of its own that feels truly personal. We loved the design of the rooms and the touches of art throughout. The food was delicious and you could tell care was taken with its making. And again all of the staff was incredibly friendly and it was easy to get help when needed. We traveled here with two children and greatly appreciated all the support from the staff. Highly recommend Villa Lena.
