The limestone façade gives it away before anything else. Built in 1889 as Park City's first public schoolhouse, Washington School House Hotel sits just above Historic Main Street, its three stories of hand-cut stone rising from the hillside like something that refused to be torn down. The restoration preserved the building's original bones while reimagining everything within. Exposed stone walls, reclaimed timber, and clean contemporary furnishings create interiors that feel both rooted and remarkably current. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the surrounding ski runs and the town below, and the sense of elevation, both literal and atmospheric, is immediate from the moment you step inside.
Twelve rooms and suites are all that occupy the building, each one individually designed with a mix of vintage and modern pieces, heated bathroom floors, and deep soaking tubs. The scale is deliberately intimate. Common spaces include a living room with a fireplace that functions as the social center of the hotel, a below-grade heated swimming pool and hot tub carved into the hillside, and a ski locker room for guests heading to or returning from the slopes. Mornings begin with a complimentary breakfast, and après-ski brings out wine and cheese in the living room, a daily ritual that makes the hotel feel less like a hotel and more like a private residence you happen to share with a handful of other guests.
The location is central to the experience. Historic Main Street unfolds just steps below the front door, its galleries, restaurants, and bars accessible on foot within minutes. Park City Mountain Resort is close enough that skiing becomes a matter of routine rather than logistics, and the town's cultural calendar, anchored by the Sundance Film Festival each January, adds a layer of energy that shifts with the seasons. In summer, the surrounding Wasatch Mountains open up for hiking, mountain biking, and long evenings on patios as the light stretches across the peaks.
Washington School House Hotel operates at a scale that most properties cannot replicate. With only twelve keys, the staff-to-guest ratio tilts toward something genuinely personal, and the details reflect it. There is no lobby in the traditional sense, no front desk formality, no branded anything. What remains is a building with real history, a setting that earns its views, and a quietness that feels less curated than simply inherent to a structure that has stood on this hillside for more than a century.

What we love about this stay
Twelve rooms in a converted schoolhouse — that's it. The intimacy here isn't manufactured; it's structural. Antique furnishings sit alongside original artworks in spaces that feel personally curated rather than designed by committee, and there's a quiet confidence to the whole place that comes from knowing exactly what it is. The heated outdoor pool, steam curling up against cold mountain air, captures the property's personality perfectly: warmth held against wildness. Mornings unfold under chandeliers in the dining room with a gourmet breakfast that feels unhurried, almost conspiratorial in its calm. This is Park City for people who want proximity to the slopes without the resort sprawl — a place where heritage and scale conspire to make everything feel slightly secret.

A very, very special place This place is extremely special. You won’t believe all the special extras they give you. I don’t want to spoil the fun by giving details, but this Inn knows the meaning of the word hospitality. The food is scrumptious and generous, the staff made me and my Golden Retriever feel right at home — every single team member over two days greeted her by name, even before I introduced her. The beds are the nicest I’ve ever slept in. Magical touches in a gorgeous, intimate setting. If I ever pass this way again, I’ll be back!!

The grooming at Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort is outstanding. This has been a year of below average snow but you can't tell when skiing the groomed runs. And the other activities like tubing and hiking more than make up for the shortfall. Another benefit was shorter (almost non-existent) lift lines. No waiting at restaurants either. Would be nice to have new snow in the trees and big bowls, but carving turns on the groomed runs was fun. The powder will just have to wait.

Amazing service focused hotel in the heart of Park Service is fantastic at this small boutique hotel where they treat you like family and the entire staff goes out of their way to make everything top notch. I really liked that, while expensive, once you are on site everything else is included as opposed to other expensive properties where they nickel and dime you with every little thing they can. Also with a large staff and a relatively small property it just feels like everyone is really attuned to making every little thing as pleasant as possible while you are here.
