The first thing you notice is the silhouette. Not the building itself but the landscape behind it, a procession of karst limestone peaks rising from the valley floor like ancient sentinels draped in mist and vegetation. Yangshuo Sugar House sits within this impossibly dramatic setting in Guangxi, China, a property born from the bones of a 1960s sugar mill that once processed cane harvested from the surrounding fields. The industrial architecture has been carefully preserved and reimagined, its raw concrete framework and original machinery now coexisting with contemporary design elements that honor the structure's working past. Exposed steel, weathered brick, and soaring volumes recall the mill's former life, while floor-to-ceiling glass opens every possible sightline to the river and mountains beyond.
The property's 117 guest rooms and suites draw deeply from the landscape. Interiors are restrained and warm, built around natural materials and muted palettes that let the views do the work. Many rooms face directly onto the Li River or the surrounding karst formations, framing scenes that shift with the light and weather throughout the day. The architectural language across the property moves between preservation and intervention. Original mill structures anchor the public spaces, while newer buildings extend into the grounds with a quietness that defers to the geography. A spa and wellness center offers treatments informed by local traditions, providing a contemplative counterpoint to the scale of the landscape outside. The swimming pool, set against the backdrop of the peaks, feels less like a resort amenity and more like a still point in a larger composition.
Dining at Yangshuo Sugar House connects guests to the culinary traditions of Guangxi. The property's restaurant draws on regional ingredients and local cooking techniques, offering menus that reflect the agricultural richness of the river valley. Meals are served in spaces that maintain the industrial character of the original mill, where the interplay of raw architectural surfaces and carefully considered lighting creates an atmosphere that is both convivial and intimate. A bar and lounge provide additional gathering spaces where evenings unfold with views of the illuminated peaks.
Beyond the property, the town of Yangshuo has long been a destination for travelers drawn to its karst scenery, the slow bends of the Li River, and the rural landscape of rice paddies and bamboo groves. Cycling through the countryside, bamboo rafting along the Yulong River, and exploring nearby villages offer ways to engage with the region at a pace that matches its character. The property serves as a thoughtful base for these explorations, its industrial heritage grounding it firmly in the local story rather than standing apart from it. What stays with you after Yangshuo Sugar House is the tension it holds so well, between the monumental weight of the landscape and the quiet intimacy of a place that was once built for labor and has been remade for stillness.

What we love about this stay
There's something quietly disarming about a property that draws its identity not from spectacle but from the landscape it inhabits. Here, the limestone karst peaks aren't a backdrop — they're the entire emotional architecture. The design threads contemporary lines through traditional Chinese sensibilities in a way that feels considered rather than contrived, with earth tones and rich textures that let the green hills outside do the talking. It's the kind of place where the setting reshapes your internal rhythm without you noticing. Families seem genuinely thought about here, not as an afterthought but woven into the fabric of the stay. And the kitchen's willingness to celebrate dietary needs rather than merely tolerate them says something real about the hospitality. You leave feeling like the mountains got closer than they should have.

The best hotel I could have ever dreamed of. Everything was perfect, the hotel staff were incredibly friendly, like no other I've ever encountered. The breakfasts were varied and incredibly delicious. Not to mention the surroundings, which exceeded my wildest expectations. Anyone who loves this kind of environment like me will feel right at home here. The most magical moment was when I checked into my room and suddenly saw rabbits staring at me from the window—an unparalleled experience. I recommend this hotel more than you can imagine.
