Great place to stay. Would be back in the future.

The staircase leads up from a quiet stretch of Main Street in the village of Catskill, and what opens before you is a suite that feels less like a rental and more like a well-considered apartment belonging to someone with good taste and no interest in excess. The Catskill Upstairs Suite at The Halbert Inn occupies the upper floor of a building rooted in the architectural vernacular of this small Hudson Valley town, offering a self-contained retreat with the warmth of a personal residence and the ease of a thoughtfully appointed getaway.
The suite is designed for comfort without pretension. A full kitchen gives you the freedom to cook with provisions from the area's farms and markets, while the living space invites long mornings with coffee and unhurried evenings. The bedroom is simple and restful, and the overall layout provides a sense of genuine privacy that larger properties sometimes struggle to deliver. Every detail suggests care rather than spectacle, from the furnishings to the quality of the linens, creating a space where you settle in quickly and feel at home almost immediately.
Catskill itself is a village that rewards curiosity. Positioned where Catskill Creek meets the Hudson River, the town has evolved into a quiet cultural pocket with galleries, independent restaurants, and a creative community that has taken root without displacing the area's rural character. The northern Catskill Mountains rise to the west, offering hiking, swimming holes, and seasonal landscapes that shift dramatically from one visit to the next. The Hudson River waterfront is minutes away, and the broader region places you within reach of Hudson, Woodstock, and the deeper wilderness of the Catskill Park.
What stays with you after a few nights at The Halbert Inn is the particular rhythm this kind of stay encourages. Without a lobby or a front desk or a breakfast service to structure your morning, you find your own pace. You walk downstairs and into town. You return when you feel like it. The suite becomes a base for whatever version of the Catskills you came looking for, whether that means long drives on country roads, afternoons spent reading by a window, or dinners at the local spots that locals themselves still frequent. It is a small-scale, unhurried kind of hospitality, and it fits this town perfectly.

There's something quietly disarming about a place that doesn't try to be everything — it just commits fully to what it is. The Halbert Inn sits within Waco's Homestead Heritage Craft Village, and that proximity to working artisans and local culture gives the stay a texture you won't find in a standard boutique hotel. The suite itself leans into a sense of history without being precious about it; the soaking tub and king bed feel like genuine comforts rather than design statements. You sense the building has a past, and the rooms honor that while staying grounded in ease. It's the kind of place that suits someone who travels to feel connected to a community, not removed from one.

This was a rare and beautiful find! We will be staying here again! Probably one of the most comfortable stays away from home that we've ever had. The bed and the linens were phenomenal!

What's not to love? So many lovely touches from the personalized welcome banner, snacks, water, coffee, robe...all the amenities of a well-run AirBnb. The place was spotless and the bed was comfy. Check-in was easy with all access via the keypads. The space was super roomy and if I had more time I would have taken a soak in the lovely tub (yes, they even provided bath salts). It is located near Homestead Heritage where you can see local artisans' work; a walking path will take you to the many Homestead shops. On Saturdays (seasonal so check the schedule) they have artisans and food kiosks at the indoor barn. Right across from the inn is Waco Waffle and a cute coffee shop is next door. It's a s It's a short drive to downtown Waco where you can visit Magnolia, the Dr. Pepper Museum, and other shops and eateries. Our last evening we sat outside of the Inn and enjoyed the balmy weather in the rocking chairs. Recommend.
