Wonderful creative space, we will stay again when we are in Waco!

Two repurposed shipping containers, stacked and welded into something unexpectedly warm, sit on a quiet stretch just minutes from Waco's most visited stretch of shops and restaurants. The Helm is not a conventional vacation rental. It is an architectural statement dressed in corrugated steel and reclaimed wood, a two-story container home that feels both intentional and inventive. From the street, its dark exterior reads as compact and modern. Inside, the design opens into something far more generous than the footprint suggests, with clean lines, natural light, and a layout that rewards curiosity at every turn.
The lower level anchors the living space with an open kitchen, a dining area, and a comfortable sitting room that flows naturally from one use to the next. Finishes lean industrial but never cold, with warm wood tones, concrete surfaces, and carefully chosen fixtures that feel more design-minded than rustic. The kitchen is fully equipped for guests who prefer to cook in rather than dine out. Upstairs, the bedroom occupies the second container, offering a private retreat set apart from the social spaces below. A staircase connects the two levels with a sense of deliberate compression and release, each floor carrying its own atmosphere. The bathroom continues the material palette with clean, modern details. Perhaps the home's most compelling feature is its rooftop deck, accessible and open to the wide Texas sky, offering a vantage point that transforms the compact property into something that feels expansive, particularly at golden hour or under a clear evening.
Location is a defining part of the experience here. The Helm sits close to the Magnolia Market at the Silos, the sprawling lifestyle destination developed by Chip and Joanna Gaines that has reshaped Waco's cultural landscape. The surrounding neighborhood offers easy access to local restaurants, coffee shops, and the Brazos River. Downtown Waco is within close reach, and the home's position makes it a practical base for exploring the city's growing food and design scene without feeling tethered to it. Baylor University's campus is nearby as well, adding a sense of life and activity to the surrounding streets.
What stays with you after a night or two at The Helm is the ingenuity of the thing. It is a home built from industrial materials that somehow manages to feel personal, a place where constraints became creative decisions. The rooftop catches the breeze. The proportions encourage slowing down. And the entire structure reminds you that a great place to stay does not need to be large. It just needs to be considered.

There's something genuinely disarming about a home built from shipping containers that still manages to feel warm — pine shiplap and barnwood will do that, turning industrial bones into something textured and inviting. The Helm sits in quiet rural land just north of Waco, and that stillness is part of the design, not a compromise. Two stacked containers create a layout that feels compact but never cramped, the kind of space where every corner was considered. The rooftop deck, reached by a spiral staircase on the exterior, is the detail that lingers — LED lights tracing the cable railing after dark, open sky above, and nothing competing for your attention. It's a stay that rewards people who find beauty in clever reinvention.

Great location. Easy access to I-35. Quiet and fun! Awesome porch on top of the container home!

Enjoyed every minute of our stay! The deck up top was great for enjoying the evenings once it cooled down. Separate rooms were perfect for us. The containers are wonderful for sound! We couldn't hear one another or anyone else around on the property. Such a peaceful and relaxing weekend in Waco! Agree with your recommendation for Waco Waffles - we went twice. Local food options were all top notch! Will return to Waco and definitely plan to return to Villastay.

Loved staying with Kenneth! We had some issues at another one of his properties that was no one’s fault and he had us moved to this property within a few hours. Both places were exactly as described and looked just like the photos. With this place I did have some issues finding a place to put my 3 month olds packnplay though, the tiny home is very narrow but after moving some table chairs around I was able to fit it. They also had everything you could possibly need- toothpaste/toothbrushes, razors, first aid kit, can openers, extra blankets and so much more. 10/10 I would absolutely stay with Kenneth again!
