Lovely place, lovely stay. Looking forward to going back.

A shipping container sits on the edge of the West Texas desert, reimagined as something unexpectedly considered. The Buffalo is a compact, architecturally deliberate retreat in Alpine, where the sparse beauty of the surrounding landscape meets a structure that was never meant to be lived in but now feels like it was always meant to be here. The container's industrial bones remain visible, but inside, the space has been thoughtfully converted into a private residence that trades square footage for intention.
The interior makes the most of its footprint with a clean, functional layout designed for two. A comfortable sleeping area, a kitchenette equipped for simple meals, and a bathroom are arranged with the kind of spatial economy that rewards good design over excess. The aesthetic leans modern and minimal, allowing the container's raw character to serve as both structure and style. Large windows frame the surrounding terrain, pulling the outdoors in and giving the space a sense of openness that belies its compact form. Climate control, Wi-Fi, and the essentials of a comfortable stay are all accounted for, making The Buffalo a genuine place to settle in rather than simply a novelty to photograph.
Alpine itself is a small, culturally rich town in the Big Bend region, home to Sul Ross State University and a quietly creative community of artists, ranchers, and desert dwellers. The town offers a handful of independent restaurants, coffee shops, and galleries worth exploring on foot or by car. Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park are both within reach, offering some of the most dramatic hiking, stargazing, and river scenery in the American Southwest. Marfa, with its art installations and minimalist desert culture, lies a short drive to the west.
The Buffalo is not about grandeur or indulgence. It is about stripping away everything unnecessary and finding that what remains is more than enough. You wake to open sky and dry air, spend the day exploring a landscape that resists domestication, and return to a space that feels honest in its simplicity. There is a particular kind of freedom in a place this pared back, where the container's walls hold just enough comfort to let the desert do the rest.

There's something disarmingly honest about a place that takes something as industrial as a shipping container and turns it into a reason to slow down. The Buffalo doesn't try to be grand — it's compact, minimal, and deliberate, and that restraint is exactly what makes it work against the enormous scale of the West Texas landscape. You feel the desert here, not in a performative way, but through the quiet and the windows and the sense that the sky is doing most of the decorating. The rooftop deck, where you can watch the Milky Way unfold over the Davis Mountains, isn't a luxury add-on — it's the whole point. This is a stay that suits people who find comfort in simplicity and don't need a lobby to feel arrived. It stays with you because it never tries too hard.

We had an amazing stay in the shipping container. The views from the deck is amazing, and Kenneth was a great host! Everything went perfect, and it was so cozy and cute :) We definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to visit Texas!

Our stay at Kenneth’s was so peaceful and convenient while visiting our family in Alpine. The space is quaint, comfy, and clean. We loved sitting on the rooftop watching the stars. The host was super helpful providing all info. About the unit and our stay prior to our arrival & was very responsive and communicated clearly throughout our stay. We will most definitely be back to stay next time we are in Alpine visiting family.

Had a lovely time in this cozy little gem, especially watching sunrises and sunsets from the roof top patio.

Kenneth’s tiny container home was perfect for our stay in Alpine while hiking Big Bend National Park! Would definitely come back!
