A riverfront escape where railroad nostalgia meets refined simplicity.
Welcome to James Station, a lovingly restored train caboose nestled along the banks of the James River—a retreat where the golden age of rail travel meets the quiet rhythms of nature. This one-of-a-kind escape invites you to slow down, unplug, and reconnect with a simpler way of being, without sacrificing the comforts of a thoughtfully curated stay.
Step inside and be transported. Gleaming wood paneling and warm ambient lighting set the tone, wrapping you in a cocoon of vintage charm. The interior is intimate but open, designed to feel cozy, not cramped. Soft seating invites you to linger with a book or glass of wine, while small, modern luxuries—from a rain-head shower to eco-conscious Public Goods toiletries—elevate your stay without erasing the caboose’s historic soul.
Each detail speaks to intentionality. Mornings begin with a cup of local coffee brewed fresh in the Keurig, sipped slowly on your private deck as the river flows steadily by. The soundtrack? A gentle mix of birdsong, rustling trees, and the occasional hum of a distant train—a nod to the property’s storied past.
Outside, a gas grill and Solo Stove fire pit turn the deck into a living room under the stars. Whether you’re grilling lunch, sharing s’mores, or simply gazing at the sky, the space invites reflection and connection.
Around the caboose, the experience continues. Hammock chairs swing gently with the breeze, perfect for an afternoon nap or catching up on a favorite novel. The front porch swing offers a peaceful perch to take in the riverscape, one slow moment at a time.
For those craving movement, the Blackwater Creek Trail system is just half a mile away—offering miles of shaded trails for biking, jogging, or meandering through the woods. And when city energy calls, downtown Lynchburg is close enough for a spontaneous dinner, art stroll, or historic walking tour—then far enough to leave it all behind again by nightfall.
James Station isn’t just a stay—it’s an experience. A bridge between then and now. A nod to the romance of the rails and a celebration of riverside solitude. Whether you're here to reconnect, reflect, or simply rest, this rare retreat offers a sense of wonder and stillness that lingers long after you depart.

Bring your own wine and groceries—there's no room service here, and that's the point. The Solo Stove fire pit is the real evening anchor; light it at dusk and let the James River do the rest. Mornings, skip the indoor seating entirely—take your Keurig coffee straight to the deck and face the water before the sun clears the treeline. That first hour is uncommonly still. If you want to stretch your legs, the Blackwater Creek trailhead is a short walk, best hit late afternoon when the canopy filters everything gold. Don't overschedule Lynchburg dinners; one night out is plenty. This caboose rewards you most when you stop trying to leave it.

We had a fantastic stay at James Station! The view was unbeatable and the train was so fun for pictures! We had a really wonderful disconnect from tech sitting outside each night on the swinging bench and just talking for hours under the stars - all from still within the city! There were so many places to thrift, eat, and see nearby - we even squished in a daytrip to go horseback riding! Would highly recommend and would definitly stay again!

Our stay at James Station was great! For a small venue, the host thought of adding every little amenity. Although we didn't bring a child as we're in our 60s & 70s, if you bring a little one to experience the caboose, I'm sure it would be magical!

Very cool place very comfy bed and pillows very hot shower. Grateful for the well stocked coffee station. So many cute spots to hang out like the bench swing, fire pit etc. The door in the bathroom that exits to the “balcony” was soooo cool! Oh and thanks for the snack at arrival we were starving!
The view!!!! We enjoyed the morning working on our computers with that view of the river!
The factory!!!! oh my god what a cool thing to see absolutely amazing experience my 8yr old son was so intrigued. We could watch them work for hours.
We also had a competition of who spotted more trains going by.
Ohhhhh and I spotted a deer family of 4 on the left side of the fire pit behind the big dumpster bin, they were so close to us!!

Had a lovely stay at James Station. The place is very accurately described and thoughtfully appointed. The neighborhood is walkable and all the shops and locals are so incredibly friendly and welcoming. Fire pit was great! WiFi was fast enough to stream and shower pressure was good.. The noise and light from the factory at night are not any worse than sleeping in an urban hotel would be. The blackout curtains are great. If you’re really sound sensitive, consider bringing earplugs but honestly it was fine. I would absolutely stay here again or at another property from these hosts!
