The building announces itself before you even step inside. A restored 1917 landmark on Plaza Herrera, the American Trade Hotel occupies one of Casco Viejo's most prominent corners, its neoclassical facade a relic of Panama City's turn-of-the-century ambitions. The original structure once housed the American Trade Developing Company, and its transformation into a 50-room hotel has preserved the architectural bones while introducing a design sensibility rooted in midcentury warmth and tropical modernism. High ceilings, terrazzo floors, and an open-air lobby framed by arched colonnades set the tone from the moment of arrival. Every detail feels considered without feeling overwrought.
Rooms range from intimate quarters to expansive suites, each outfitted with custom furnishings, locally sourced artwork, and a palette that draws from the surrounding neighborhood's sun-washed facades and iron balconies. Many look out over Plaza Herrera itself, where the daily rhythms of Casco Viejo unfold below. The hotel's public spaces are designed to blur the boundary between guest and neighborhood. Danilo's, the ground-floor jazz bar, anchors the social life of the property with live music programming that draws both visitors and locals alike, its vintage spirit echoing the golden-age character of the building. Upstairs, the rooftop offers a pool and open-air lounge with panoramic views across the old quarter's terra-cotta rooftops to the modern skyline beyond. It is the kind of vantage point that makes Panama City's contradictions feel like an asset.
Casco Viejo is Panama City's UNESCO World Heritage neighborhood, a dense labyrinth of colonial and art deco architecture undergoing one of Latin America's most compelling urban revivals. Churches, plazas, galleries, and independent restaurants sit within walking distance. The Cinta Costera waterfront promenade stretches nearby, and the Canal Zone is a short drive away. The American Trade Hotel sits at the center of this energy without chasing it. It functions as both a retreat and a gathering place, a property that understands the neighborhood well enough to let it in.
What stays with you is the atmosphere of gentle collision. Heritage architecture and contemporary design. A jazz bar that feels like it has always been there. A rooftop pool suspended above centuries of history. The American Trade Hotel doesn't perform its sense of place. It simply occupies it, with the kind of confidence that only comes from belonging.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular energy to a hotel that lives inside a restored landmark in a neighborhood like Casco Viejo — it carries weight without feeling heavy. The American Trade Hotel sits at that rare intersection where colonial architecture and contemporary design don't compete but genuinely converse, and you feel it in the high ceilings and artisanal details of the lobby before you've even reached your room. What sets the mood apart is the jazz bar, which isn't an afterthought but something closer to the property's heartbeat, giving the evenings a warmth and looseness that most boutique hotels only gesture toward. You're steps from cobblestone streets, plazas, and centuries of history, yet the hotel never tries to outshine its surroundings — it simply belongs to them.
