The entrance reveals itself slowly. You pass through the narrow streets of Casco Viejo, Panama City's historic peninsula, where centuries-old facades lean into one another and bougainvillea spills from wrought-iron balconies. Then the doors of Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo open, and the scale shifts. What was once the Club Unión, a storied social club dating to the early twentieth century, has been reimagined as one of Latin America's most striking heritage hotels. The restoration honors the building's neoclassical bones while layering in French art de vivre and contemporary design. Grand archways, original tile work, and soaring ceilings create a sense of occasion from the moment you step inside. The lobby feels less like a hotel reception and more like the foyer of a private cultural institution, with curated art and careful lighting that lets the architecture speak.
The property houses 89 rooms and suites, each designed to reflect the dialogue between Panama's tropical character and European elegance. Interiors are generous and refined, with high ceilings, custom furnishings, and a palette drawn from the surrounding cityscape. Many rooms open onto views of the Pacific Ocean, the city skyline, or the hotel's interior courtyard. Suites offer expanded living areas and deeper immersion into the building's original architectural details. Throughout, the design avoids pastiche. It feels contemporary and confident, with heritage textures serving as a backdrop rather than a costume.
Dining at the property moves between several distinct experiences. Brasserie 1903 anchors the culinary offering with French-inspired cuisine interpreted through Panamanian ingredients, set within a space that carries the formality and warmth of a classic European brasserie. The Cocktail Bar channels the spirit of the original Club Unión, offering craft cocktails in an atmosphere steeped in the building's social history. For more casual moments, the poolside terrace provides lighter fare and tropical drinks against the backdrop of the old quarter's rooftops. The rooftop pool itself is a defining feature of the property, an elevated retreat with panoramic views across the Pacific and the layered skyline of Panama City. The So SPA draws on both French wellness traditions and local botanicals, offering treatments in a setting that balances indulgence with genuine restoration.
Casco Viejo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the hotel sits at the center of its ongoing renaissance. The neighborhood is a living collage of colonial Spanish, French, and Art Deco architecture, home to independent galleries, jazz bars, neighborhood plazas, and some of the city's most compelling restaurants. The proximity to the waterfront Cinta Costera, the ruins of Panamá Viejo, and the canal zone places the hotel within easy reach of the capital's most significant landmarks, while the old quarter itself offers the kind of streetscape that rewards aimless wandering. Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo does not stand apart from its surroundings. It draws its identity from them. The feeling that lingers is one of arrival in the fullest sense, not simply checking into a hotel but stepping into a city's living history, with all the texture, warmth, and quiet grandeur that implies.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular quality to a hotel that sits inside a neighborhood rather than apart from it, and this property in Casco Viejo has that rare porousness — the cobblestone streets, the Spanish colonial plazas, the artisan boutiques all feel like extensions of the lobby rather than excursions from it. French elegance threads through the rooms without overpowering the local artistry, and the result is a design language that feels genuinely rooted rather than imported. The Pacific glimmers beyond floor-to-ceiling windows, and the garden and pool offer a stillness that contrasts beautifully with the quarter's lively energy just outside. Evenings at the terrace restaurant, where Panamanian culinary tradition meets refined gastronomy, have a warmth that feels earned rather than staged. It's the kind of place where distant salsa music drifts into your room at night, and you realize the city hasn't been kept at arm's length — it's been invited in.

Overall the experience was incredible from arrival to departure. There were a few areas of opportunity namely the service at La Caleta. Our server during dinner the first night seemed lost and frazzled which resulted in mediocre service. The next morning I went to breakfast and a different server was standing in a corner with his eyes fully closed that he didn’t notice when we were seated. He also asked for our order twice
