The lobby alone tells you this is not a conventional Austin hotel. Austin Proper Hotel rises at the edge of the Second Street District, its interiors shaped entirely by Kelly Wearstler, whose layered maximalism transforms every floor into a study in texture, color, and deliberate contrast. Woven rattan, rich leathers, patterned tiles, and unexpected art pieces create spaces that feel collected rather than curated, as though assembled over decades by someone with extraordinary taste and zero interest in restraint. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere shifts from the energy of downtown Austin to something more intimate, more considered.
The 244 rooms and suites carry Wearstler's signature throughout, with custom furnishings, bold textiles, and bathrooms clad in marble and brass. Many rooms offer views over Lady Bird Lake or the downtown skyline, and the higher floors frame the city with a sense of cinematic remove. The Residences, a collection of extended-stay suites, expand the concept further with full kitchens and dedicated living areas designed for longer stays without sacrificing any of the hotel's visual personality.
Dining and drinking are central to the experience here. The Peacock, the hotel's ground-floor restaurant, serves a menu rooted in Gulf Coast and Mediterranean influences, set within one of Wearstler's most visually striking interiors. Upstairs, Goldie's is a rooftop lounge and pool club that draws both hotel guests and locals with craft cocktails, a relaxed menu, and panoramic views of the Austin skyline. The pool deck itself becomes a social scene on warm afternoons, lined with cabanas and softened by the hum of the city below. For morning rituals, a coffee and juice bar on the ground level offers a quieter start before the day unfolds.
The pool level also houses a fitness center and a spa offering treatments that lean toward restorative simplicity. Below, the hotel's public spaces function as gathering points throughout the day, shifting from morning calm to evening energy with a natural, unhurried rhythm. Austin Proper sits within easy reach of Congress Avenue, Rainey Street, the Convention Center, and the trails along Lady Bird Lake, placing you at the intersection of Austin's creative culture and its outdoor life. But the property itself holds its own gravity. You may arrive intending to explore the city and find yourself lingering instead, drawn back to the rooftop, to the restaurant, to the particular pleasure of a hotel that feels less like a place to stay and more like a place someone designed specifically for you to discover.

What we love about this stay
What strikes you first is how the design feels like a conversation with Austin itself — not a generic luxury hotel that happens to be located here, but something genuinely shaped by the city's eclectic, slightly irreverent energy. The interiors carry real intentionality, with textures and craftsmanship that reward a second look rather than dazzling on first impression. There's a warmth to the place that feels earned, not manufactured. The dining pulls from an unexpected intersection of American, Mediterranean, and Moroccan influences, which gives meals a sense of discovery rather than obligation. And the pool, set against the city's backdrop, functions less as an amenity and more as a decompression chamber between Austin's relentless creative buzz and the quieter rhythms of the hotel. It's the kind of property that suits someone who wants to be close to the live music and the galleries but needs a place that holds its own atmosphere when they return.
