The stone archways appear almost without warning. Step off the leafy streets of Shanghai's former French Concession and through the gates of Capella Shanghai, and the city's velocity falls away. What greets you is a meticulously restored collection of shikumen buildings, the iconic stone-gate houses that once defined neighborhood life in early twentieth-century Shanghai. Here, heritage architecture has been reimagined as one of the city's most intimate luxury hotels, a place where the textures of old Shanghai hold steady against a backdrop of contemporary design and discreet, deeply personal service.
The property comprises 55 rooms and suites alongside a collection of one- to four-bedroom villas, each set within the restored shikumen structures. Interiors draw on a palette that honors the building's origins while introducing modern comfort through generous proportions, fine materials, and quiet technological detail. Villas unfold across multiple levels with private gardens, living spaces, and kitchens, lending the feeling of occupying your own residence within a hidden neighborhood. The sense of enclosure and privacy is striking for a property so close to the energy of Huaihai Road. Courtyards link the buildings together, creating a network of intimate outdoor spaces shaded by mature trees and framed by the distinctive grey-brick facades that define the architectural character.
Dining at Capella Shanghai centers on Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire, bringing the celebrated French chef's culinary vision to a setting that feels at once sophisticated and warmly personal. The restaurant offers refined French cuisine rooted in precision and seasonal expression, presented within interiors that complement the property's architectural heritage. For more casual moments, the Lobby Lounge serves as a gathering space for afternoon tea, light bites, and cocktails in surroundings that blend period detail with relaxed elegance. Auriga Spa provides a contemplative counterpoint to the city outside, offering treatment rooms, wellness rituals, and a tranquil atmosphere designed around restoration and balance. An indoor swimming pool and well-equipped fitness center round out the physical offerings.
The French Concession remains one of Shanghai's most coveted neighborhoods, where plane tree-lined avenues give way to independent boutiques, galleries, cafés, and some of the city's most compelling restaurants. Capella Shanghai sits within this cultural fabric rather than apart from it, its shikumen compound echoing the residential scale and street-level intimacy that once characterized the entire district. The location offers both deep immersion in Shanghai's layered history and immediate access to its contemporary creative energy.
What lingers after a stay at Capella Shanghai is not grandeur but proximity. Proximity to a vanishing architectural form, to the rhythms of a neighborhood that rewards unhurried attention, and to a style of hospitality that feels less like performance and more like an instinct for what matters. It is a property that earns its stillness.

What we love about this stay
What gets you here is the architecture — those restored 1930s Shikumen facades that feel less like a hotel entrance and more like slipping through a seam in time. Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li sits in the Xuhui District with a quietness that feels earned, not engineered; the city's energy is still there, just softened to a murmur beyond the courtyard walls. The interiors carry that same tension between eras — plush, modern, but threaded with Chinese heritage in ways that reward attention rather than demand it. Its proximity to the French Concession means the neighborhood itself becomes part of the experience, all tree-lined lanes and independent shops just beyond the gates. This is a property for travelers who want Shanghai's cultural texture without the performance of it — a place where history isn't just referenced but genuinely inhabited.

Private villas fantastic in every last detail The description on the site does not do it justice: it's nothing like a hotel room, bit instead a 4-storey villa. Beautiful in every last detail, from the furniture to the artwork, to fantastic attentive, but unobtrusive staff. First floor was living room / office, second floor a sitting room/tea room, third floor a fantastic bedroom, fourth a - slightly underwhelming in comparison to the rest - bathroom, but with fantastic shower amenities; and then there's a rooftop terrace. Breakfast was included and very good and a reasonable price. This is a hotel that can compete with the likes of Aman, Puli and Peninsula, on of the best in Shanghai.

Lack of a pool was the only negative. Asking to provide at least 50 characters in the second negative.
