The entrance is easy to miss if you're not looking for it. A Venetian Gothic façade rises along Michigan Avenue, its ornate stonework a relic from 1893, when the building opened as an elite private club for the city's athletes and power brokers. Step through the doors of the Chicago Athletic Association and the scale of its public spaces announces something uncommon. Soaring ceilings, checkerboard marble floors, dark wood paneling, and a series of grand gathering rooms unfold across the ground level with a confidence that belongs to another century entirely. The property occupies one of the most enviable positions in the city, directly across from Millennium Park, with the Art Institute of Chicago as a neighbor and the lakefront minutes away on foot.
The hotel's 241 rooms and suites carry the building's athletic heritage forward with a design vocabulary rooted in vintage sporting culture. Expect leather accents, warm wood tones, classic pennants, and a palette that feels handsome and collegiate rather than precious. Many rooms look out toward Grant Park or the lake, while others frame the architectural drama of the Michigan Avenue streetscape. The variety of room categories accommodates everything from efficient solo stays to more generous suites suited to longer visits. Throughout, the design treats the building's history as a living element rather than a museum piece.
The property's food and beverage program is anchored by several distinct venues that shape daily life inside the hotel. Cindy's, the rooftop restaurant and terrace bar, commands panoramic views of Millennium Park, the Bean, and Lake Michigan beyond. It operates as both a daytime gathering spot and an evening destination, drawing locals and guests alike. On the ground floor, Cherry Circle Room serves as a more intimate dining room with a cocktail bar atmosphere rooted in the building's clubhouse origins. Game Room, true to its name, offers billiards, bocce, shuffleboard, and other diversions alongside drinks, preserving the spirit of competitive leisure that defined the original Athletic Association. Milk Room, a small reservation-only microbar, provides a more private setting for rare spirits and crafted cocktails. Together, these spaces ensure the hotel functions as much as a social hub for the city as it does a place to sleep.
The surrounding neighborhood is Chicago's cultural center of gravity. The Art Institute sits steps away. The Chicago Riverwalk, the Theatre District, and the shops along the Magnificent Mile are all within easy reach. Millennium Park itself serves as an extension of the hotel's living room, visible from multiple vantage points throughout the property. This is not a hotel that asks you to leave the city behind. It places you squarely inside it, at the intersection of architecture, culture, and public life that makes downtown Chicago singular.
What stays with you after a visit to the Chicago Athletic Association is the particular energy of a building that has always existed for gathering. The scale is grand, the history is palpable, but the atmosphere is fundamentally social. It is a hotel that rewards lingering in its lobbies, settling into a game of shuffleboard with a cocktail in hand, watching the sun set over the park from the rooftop. The private club became public, and it lost none of its magnetism in the transition.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular gravity to a building that once gathered socialites and athletes under Gothic arches — and you feel it the moment you step inside. The wood-paneled interiors and ornate staircases haven't been softened into something generically boutique; they've been restored with a seriousness that lets the original character lead. Stained glass catches light in ways that remind you this was never meant to be a hotel — it was a clubhouse, and that spirit of belonging lingers. The Cherry Circle Room, all dark wood and leather banquettes, feels like a room that rewards settling in rather than rushing through. And the rooftop, with Millennium Park and Lake Michigan stretched out before you, offers a perspective on Chicago that earns its place honestly. This is a property for travelers who want to feel the weight of a city's history without sacrificing comfort — a stay that imprints itself less through luxury and more through atmosphere.

One of the tvs didnt work, and neither did the room phone. Dislike the texting communication, and having to go thru 3rd party just to call front desk.

This is a historic hotel. The original woodwork and mosaic tile flooring is beautiful! Sitting by the large windows overlooking Millennium Park for a freshly made breakfast was great!

While the rooms are small, they have everything you need and the bed and pillows were very comfortable. We really enjoyed the shower as well. The dining in the lobby was great and service was good there. Finally the location is great if you want to be downtown by the park. There is a lot you can walk to from there.
