The drive alone prepares you. Past stone walls and split-rail fences, through the kind of Virginia horse country that moves at its own deliberate pace, Goodstone Inn & Restaurant appears not as a single building but as a collection of cottages and residences scattered across nearly 265 acres of farmland and gardens. It is the sort of property that reveals itself slowly, each turn in the gravel path opening onto another view of the Blue Ridge foothills, another garden border thick with lavender or boxwood, another quiet corner where the only sound is wind moving through pasture grass.
Accommodations are spread across several distinct buildings, each with its own character. The Carriage House, the Dutch Cottage, the Spring House, the Manor House, the Bull Barn, and the French Farm Cottage offer a range of rooms and suites that feel less like hotel quarters and more like stays in a private country residence. Interiors draw on period antiques, canopy beds, deep soaking tubs, and working fireplaces, while many rooms open directly onto porches or terraces overlooking the estate's grounds. The scale is intimate and the pace unhurried, with no two accommodations quite alike in layout or personality.
Dining is central to the experience here. The Conservatory at Goodstone serves as the property's fine dining restaurant, offering a menu rooted in ingredients drawn from the estate's own gardens and nearby farms. Meals unfold in a glass-enclosed space that feels connected to the surrounding landscape in every season. The kitchen's approach is seasonal and deliberate, letting the quality of what grows on and around the property guide each course. For more casual moments, afternoon tea and lighter fare offer quieter counterpoints to the evening table. The relationship between land and plate is not a marketing conceit here but a practical reality, visible in the kitchen garden steps from the dining room door.
Beyond the table, days at Goodstone unfold across the property's considerable grounds. Walking trails wind through meadows and along ponds. The outdoor pool offers a place to settle on warm afternoons, framed by open views of the countryside. Horseback riding, cycling, and fly fishing are among the activities available in the surrounding area, and the estate's proximity to Virginia's wine country places a number of notable vineyards within easy reach. Yet the property never pushes you toward a schedule. The rhythm is your own, shaped by the land, the light, and whatever draws you next, whether that is a glass of local wine on a cottage porch or a long walk through fields that seem to stretch without interruption toward the mountains beyond.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular quality to a place spread across 265 acres of Virginia countryside that can't be manufactured — a sense that the land itself sets the tempo. Goodstone feels like an estate that simply decided to welcome guests, not a hotel that dressed itself up as one. The interiors walk a line between English country rusticity and French refinement without tipping into costume, and the fireplaces in the rooms feel less like a design flourish and more like the heart of the evening. The restaurant takes its farm-proximity seriously, leaning into modern American and French cooking with local ingredients that actually taste rooted in place. It's the kind of stay that suits people who want to feel genuinely unhurried — not performing relaxation, but arriving at it naturally, surrounded by rolling green and open sky.

Loved it! Our 4th stay here; we will come back again! Gorgeous location in Virginia horse fox hunting capital! Goodstone is such a beautiful property! Cottages are romantic and cozy. Breakfast is excellent! For an included breakfast it is very gourmet and high end! Lots of options for breakfast to satisfy anyone!

A favorite destination to stay and dine! We were very impressed with everything. No one else was staying at the Spring House so we had the whole beautiful house to ourselves. The place was gorgeous as it was decorated for Christmas, was modern, (looked like it was just remodeled), and was comfortable and cozy with a fire in the fireplace. The bed was excellent and the bathroom was everything you could ask for. Dining at dinner and breakfast was delicious! Will definitely keep this place in mind for a spring or summer visit so we can take advantage of the hiking, birdwatching and pool experience.
