The approach alone tells you something. A winding drive through 265 acres of preserved Virginia countryside, past grazing horses and old stone walls, before the property reveals itself in pieces: a historic manor house, a cluster of cottages and carriage houses, gardens that have been tended with the kind of patience that suggests permanence rather than performance. Goodstone Inn & Restaurant belongs to Middleburg's landscape as naturally as the rolling pastures and split-rail fences that define this corner of the Virginia Piedmont.
Accommodations are spread across the estate in a collection of distinct buildings, each with its own character. Guest rooms and suites occupy the main manor, restored cottages, a carriage house, and a spring house, offering a range of settings from intimate quarters with fireplaces and deep soaking tubs to more expansive suites with private porches overlooking the countryside. The variety means no two stays feel quite the same. Some rooms open directly onto gardens; others sit higher on the property with views that stretch across the fields. Throughout, the interiors balance country comfort with understated refinement, favoring warm textiles, antique furnishings, and the kind of quiet that only real distance from a city can provide.
The restaurant is central to the experience here, drawing guests and locals alike to a dining room that takes the surrounding farmland seriously. Seasonal menus reflect the estate's own gardens and the broader agricultural community of the region, with ingredients sourced from nearby farms and producers. Meals unfold at an unhurried pace, whether taken inside the candlelit dining room or outdoors on the terrace when the weather allows. The wine program complements the kitchen's sensibility, leaning into Virginia's growing reputation as a winemaking region while reaching further when the occasion calls for it.
Middleburg itself sits at the heart of Virginia's horse and wine country, a small town of stone-front shops and quiet streets roughly an hour west of Washington, D.C. The surrounding area is home to some of the state's most celebrated vineyards and equestrian estates, and the countryside invites exploration by car, on foot, or on horseback. Back on the property, the grounds offer their own kind of leisure: walking trails through open meadows, a pool for warmer months, and the simple pleasure of sitting with a glass of wine while the light changes over the Blue Ridge foothills in the distance.
What stays with you after Goodstone is not a single detail but a rhythm. Mornings that begin slowly, afternoons spent wandering the grounds without agenda, evenings that gather around a table set with care. It is the rare property where the land itself feels like the host, and where staying a little longer always seems like the better idea.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular quality to a place spread across 265 acres of Virginia countryside that can't be manufactured — a sense that the land itself sets the tempo. Goodstone feels like an estate that simply decided to welcome guests, not a hotel that dressed itself up as one. The interiors walk a line between English country rusticity and French refinement without tipping into costume, and the fireplaces in the rooms feel less like a design flourish and more like the heart of the evening. The restaurant takes its farm-proximity seriously, leaning into modern American and French cooking with local ingredients that actually taste rooted in place. It's the kind of stay that suits people who want to feel genuinely unhurried — not performing relaxation, but arriving at it naturally, surrounded by rolling green and open sky.

Breakfast is excellent! For an included breakfast it is very gourmet and high end! Lots of options for breakfast to satisfy anyone!

A favorite destination to stay and dine! We were very impressed with everything. No one else was staying at the Spring House so we had the whole beautiful house to ourselves. The place was gorgeous as it was decorated for Christmas, was modern, (looked like it was just remodeled), and was comfortable and cozy with a fire in the fireplace. The bed was excellent and the bathroom was everything you could ask for. Dining at dinner and breakfast was delicious! Will definitely keep this place in mind for a spring or summer visit so we can take advantage of the hiking, birdwatching and pool experience.
