The fieldstone facade appears through the trees like something that has always been there, settled into the main street of one of Virginia's most storied small towns. The Red Fox Inn & Tavern has stood in Middleburg since 1728, making it one of the oldest continually operating inns in America. Its architecture tells that story honestly: hand-hewn beams, original pine floors, thick stone walls that hold the cool in summer and the warmth in winter. This is not a property that has been reimagined or repositioned. It has simply endured, gathering character across nearly three centuries of Virginia hospitality.
The inn offers a collection of individually appointed guest rooms and suites spread across its historic buildings, each furnished with period antiques, four-poster beds, and the kind of layered comfort that comes from rooms that have been lived in and loved for generations. Some feature original fireplaces. All carry a sense of intimacy and proportion that modern construction rarely achieves. The experience here is unhurried and personal, shaped by the rhythms of a small Virginia town rather than the expectations of a large hotel.
The Tavern is the property's beating heart, a candlelit dining room where seasonal Mid-Atlantic cuisine meets centuries-old atmosphere. Stone hearths, low ceilings, and an extensive wine list create evenings that feel both celebratory and familiar. The restaurant draws locals and travelers alike, anchoring the inn's identity as a gathering place rather than simply a place to sleep. The adjoining pub, Mosby's Tavern, offers a more casual setting for lighter fare, craft cocktails, and conversation. Together they form the social center of the property, reinforcing the inn's deep connection to its community.
Middleburg itself is the capital of Virginia's horse and hunt country, a landscape of rolling green pastures, stone walls, and vineyards stretching west toward the Blue Ridge. The town's main street is lined with independent shops, galleries, and tasting rooms, all within steps of the inn's front door. Wineries and farms surround the area, and the countryside rewards those who explore it slowly, whether on horseback, by car along winding back roads, or on foot through the village. The proximity to Washington, D.C., just an hour east, makes this landscape feel especially earned, a world apart despite its accessibility.
What lingers after a stay at The Red Fox Inn & Tavern is not grandeur but presence. The weight of a wooden door latch, the glow of firelight against stone, the sound of the town settling into evening. It is a place where history is not performed but inhabited, where the luxury is simply the continuity of care across centuries, offered without pretense to anyone who walks through the door.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular quality to a place that's been welcoming people since the 18th century — the walls hold a kind of quiet confidence that no amount of design can manufacture. The Red Fox Inn feels like that. Its 22 rooms blend antique furnishings and period artwork with genuine comfort, and the effect is less curated museum, more well-loved home with excellent taste. You feel the weight of Middleburg's history here without it becoming a performance. The tavern anchors the experience, serving food rooted in the surrounding Virginia farmland alongside regional wines that actually belong on the table. It's the kind of place where an evening by the fireplace feels earned, not staged — a retreat that rewards travelers who appreciate character over novelty.
