The David Whitney Building has commanded the corner of Park Avenue and Woodward since 1915, its Neo-Renaissance facade a lasting testament to the ambition of the city it anchors. Designed by Daniel Burnham, the building spent decades as one of Detroit's most prominent office towers before falling silent alongside much of the city's downtown core. Its resurrection as Hotel David Whitney, Autograph Collection, is both a preservation story and a declaration of faith in Detroit's creative resurgence. Step inside and the original details announce themselves immediately: ornate terra cotta ornamentation, a soaring lobby with restored marble and intricate plasterwork, and a light-filled atrium that draws the eye upward through the building's central core. The architecture carries weight here, not as a museum piece but as a living framework for a hotel that feels distinctly, unapologetically Detroit.
The hotel's 136 guest rooms occupy the upper floors of the historic tower, where high ceilings and oversized windows frame views across downtown and the surrounding cityscape. Interiors balance the building's century-old bones with contemporary furnishings and modern comforts, each room shaped by the structure's original footprint, meaning no two layouts feel quite the same. Suites offer expanded living areas and deeper immersion in the building's architectural character. The atrium remains the property's defining interior space, its glass ceiling flooding the central corridor with natural light and connecting guests to the building's vertical drama at every level.
Dining and gathering unfold within this same historic framework. The property's restaurant and bar offerings give guests reason to linger on site, with food and cocktail programs rooted in the city's spirited hospitality culture. Common areas throughout the hotel invite pause and conversation, their design honoring original details while creating spaces that feel current and lived-in rather than preserved under glass.
Location is inseparable from the experience here. The hotel sits along Woodward Avenue, Detroit's central artery, within walking distance of the theaters, galleries, sports venues, and independent restaurants that define the city's ongoing revival. The Detroit Opera House, Fox Theatre, and Campus Martius Park are all close neighbors, and the energy of the surrounding blocks reflects a downtown that has rediscovered its pulse without abandoning the grit and authenticity that make it compelling. Hotel David Whitney does not attempt to smooth over that complexity. It draws from it, offering a stay shaped equally by historic grandeur and the momentum of a city still very much in the act of becoming.

What we love about this stay
There's something quietly thrilling about a building that carries its history without performing it. The Hotel David Whitney lives in that tension — a restored skylight flooding the grand atrium with natural light, while the rest of the space leans confidently modern. It feels like Detroit itself: unapologetically layered, comfortable with contrast. You sense the city's creative pulse the moment you step outside, but the hotel doesn't try to compete with it. Instead, it offers a kind of composed calm at the center of things. The rooms are straightforward in their comfort, unhurried in their design. And evenings at the bar have that low-lit, end-of-day ease where conversation comes naturally. It's a stay that rewards people who appreciate a building with real bones and a city with real momentum.

The hotel was beautiful. The room was very clean, and I greatly appreciated the handheld shower and the full mattress enclosures on the mattresses to prevent parasite infestation. It really provided great piece of mind.
