A columned portico and gaslit entrance set the tone before you even step inside. Hotel Fauchere occupies a storied 1852 building in Milford, Pennsylvania, a small town perched above the Delaware River where the Pocono Plateau meets the Water Gap. Built by Louis Fauchere, a Swiss-born chef who once presided over the kitchen at Delmonico's in New York, the hotel has carried a thread of culinary distinction and European elegance through more than a century and a half. Restored with exacting care, the property today operates as a 16-room boutique hotel that feels closer to a private residence than a conventional inn, its interiors layered with antiques, original artwork, and period details that honor the building's Victorian bones without freezing them in time.
The rooms and suites are individually appointed, each one distinct in layout and character. Expect silk draperies, marble baths, fine linens, and a sense of proportion that reflects an era when guest rooms were designed for lingering rather than merely sleeping. Some rooms overlook Broad Street, the town's quiet main artery, while others face the property's gardens. There is no sameness here. The Delmonico Room restaurant anchors the ground floor, offering a menu rooted in seasonal American cooking with French influence, served in a dining room that feels intimate and unhurried. The Bar Louis lounge provides a more casual counterpoint, its atmosphere recalling a gentleman's parlor with deep leather seating, a curated cocktail list, and a fireplace that draws guests in during cooler months. On warm evenings, the veranda becomes the most coveted seat in town, its rocking chairs oriented toward the tree-lined street below.
Milford itself is a town of surprising cultural depth for its size. Galleries, independent shops, and a handful of noteworthy restaurants line its walkable streets, while the surrounding landscape offers hiking along the Appalachian Trail, paddling on the Delaware, and access to some of the most striking waterfall terrain in the Northeast. Grey Towers, the Pinchot family estate and a National Historic Site, sits just up the hill. The hotel's position makes it a natural base for exploring this stretch of northeastern Pennsylvania, though many guests find that the property itself provides reason enough to stay close.
Hotel Fauchere leaves you with a rhythm that feels increasingly rare. Mornings are quiet, unhurried, shaped by a breakfast service that takes its time. Afternoons unfold on the veranda or along nearby trails. Evenings return you to the Delmonico Room or Bar Louis, where the light softens and the pace slows further still. It is a place that rewards presence over productivity, a property where history is not merely displayed but genuinely inhabited.

What we love about this stay
Hotel Fauchere carries the quiet confidence of a place that knows exactly what it is — a small-town property with genuinely refined instincts, set against the unhurried rhythm of Milford and the wild beauty of the Delaware Water Gap. There's a layered quality here, where contemporary comfort meets a real sense of cultural heritage without either feeling forced. The private conservatory, filled with greenery and natural light, sets a tone that the rest of the property follows: intimate, considered, never showy. You move between dining rooms that each have their own distinct personality — the Delmonico Room's polished elegance, Bar Louis's more spirited energy — and it feels less like a hotel with restaurants and more like a place built around the art of gathering well. It's the kind of stay that lingers not because of any single grand gesture, but because every detail quietly insists on care.

- The scent of freshly drawn espresso curls through the air as heated floors greet your bare feet—a quiet overture to the refined intimacy that defines every moment here. The Compact Room is no exercise in minimalism for its own sake; it is a masterfully edited sanctuary where Frette Italian linens drape a plush queen bed beneath a cloud-like down duvet, and a deep soaking tub beckons after twilight wanderings. Individually decorated, each room carries the soul of a storied pied-à-terre. This is where less becomes luminously, unforgettably more.
