There is a particular stillness to entering Hotel Vilòn, one that belongs less to hotels and more to the private homes of old Roman families. Set within the sixteenth-century Palazzo Borghese, just steps from the gardens of the Villa Borghese, the hotel occupies a wing of one of Rome's most storied noble residences. The entrance is discreet, almost hidden, as if the building would rather you already know where to find it. Inside, the scale shifts immediately. This is not a grand lobby hotel. It is a place of eighteen rooms, each furnished with a collector's instinct, where antiques sit alongside contemporary art and the atmosphere recalls a well-loved private apartment more than a conventional boutique property.
The rooms and suites at Hotel Vilòn vary considerably in character, shaped by the palazzo's original architecture. Some feature soaring ceilings with exposed wooden beams, others open onto small private terraces or overlook the palazzo's internal courtyard. Fabrics are rich without being heavy, and furnishings lean toward the personal rather than the uniform. Several suites feel genuinely residential in proportion, with separate sitting areas, freestanding bathtubs, and bookshelves that invite lingering. The hotel's library and sitting rooms function as shared living spaces, stocked with art books and warmed by the kind of layered decoration that suggests decades of thoughtful accumulation rather than a single design moment.
At the heart of daily life here is Adelaide, the hotel's restaurant, which draws both guests and Romans to its tables. The dining room carries the palazzo's atmosphere forward with candlelit intimacy and a menu rooted in Italian cooking that shifts with the seasons. Meals can also be taken in the courtyard when weather allows, a setting framed by the palazzo's original stone walls. A small bar adjacent to the main living spaces serves as a natural gathering point in the evening, offering cocktails and Italian wines in a setting that feels closer to a friend's drawing room than a hotel lounge.
The location places you in the heart of historic Rome, within walking distance of the Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, and the Villa Borghese gardens. The neighborhood around Palazzo Borghese is threaded with artisan shops, galleries, and the kind of quiet side streets that reward wandering without a map. Yet returning to the hotel each evening feels like stepping out of the city entirely, behind heavy doors and into a Rome that belongs to a slower, more private register.
Hotel Vilòn leaves behind a feeling that is difficult to name precisely. It is the sense of having been a guest in someone's home rather than a visitor passing through a hotel. The rooms hold their warmth long after you leave them. The courtyard stays with you. It is Rome at its most intimate, kept rather than curated, and offered without ceremony.

What we love about this stay
What gets you first is the scale — eighteen rooms inside a 17th-century palazzo, which means the whole place carries the hush and intimacy of a private residence rather than a hotel. Ilaria Miani's interiors walk a rare line: raw linen and antique ceramic tiles alongside modern pieces, assembled with a collector's confidence that never tips into showiness. The garden courtyard, shaded by centuries-old wisteria, is the kind of space Rome occasionally reveals to people who aren't rushing through it — mornings here with warm cornetti and serious coffee feel unhurried in a way that recalibrates your entire day. You're steps from Via del Babuino's antique dealers and the Borghese Gallery, but the real pull is how inseparable the hotel becomes from the city itself in your memory.

The staff at Hotel Vilòn were absolutely amazing and made our time there super memorable. We stayed in a room with a very charming terrace and enjoyed breakfast on the terrace one morning which was lovely! The hotel’s location is great as it’s on a quiet street but very close to many of Rome’s attractions (within walking distance). We feel so grateful to have spent some of our honeymoon there!
