The building arrived first as an icon. Opened in 1909, La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich sits directly on the western shore of Lake Zurich, its Belle Époque façade unchanged against a backdrop of alpine water and city skyline. But step inside and the atmosphere shifts entirely. A comprehensive redesign by Philippe Starck has turned this storied address into something altogether more playful, more personal, more alive. The interiors move between nautical references and surrealist wit, with maritime blues, polished woods, and unexpected art pieces creating rooms that feel less like a traditional Swiss hotel and more like the private yacht of a very well-traveled host.
The hotel's 40 rooms and suites vary in size and orientation, many offering direct views across the lake toward the distant peaks beyond. Starck's design carries through each space with a mix of custom furnishings, soft color palettes, and carefully placed objects that reward closer attention. Suites open onto private terraces where the water is close enough to feel like a companion rather than a backdrop. The scale remains intimate throughout, reinforcing the sense that this is a residence rather than a grand hotel in the conventional sense.
La Cuisine, the property's restaurant, draws from Mediterranean and Japanese influences, presenting a menu that shifts with the seasons and leans toward lighter, produce-driven dishes. In warmer months, the lakeside terrace becomes the most coveted dining address in the neighborhood, tables arranged just above the water's edge. Le Bar offers cocktails in an atmosphere that borrows from 1920s ocean liner lounges, its interiors rich with dark wood and ambient light. The Eden Spa provides a focused wellness experience with treatment rooms, a sauna, and a hammam, scaled to match the property's boutique proportions. A small fitness area rounds out the offering for those who prefer to keep their routines intact.
The hotel's position on Utoquai places it within easy reach of Zurich's cultural and commercial life. The opera house, the Bahnhofstrasse shopping corridor, and the cobblestoned lanes of the old town are all a short walk along the lakefront promenade. Yet the property's orientation toward the water creates a feeling of remove, a threshold between the energy of the city and something calmer. La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich does not compete with Zurich's larger hotels for scale or spectacle. Its appeal is more specific: a historic shell made vividly contemporary, a lakefront address that feels private, and a personality that rewards guests who appreciate design, humor, and restraint in equal measure.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular tension here that's hard to replicate — a 1909 neoclassical shell on Lake Zurich, reimagined by Philippe Starck with a hand that's playful but never irreverent. The result is a hotel that feels genuinely layered, where history isn't preserved behind glass but folded into something modern and alive. Rooms are individually designed, which matters — you sense a point of view rather than a formula. The location on Utoquai, steps from Bahnhofstrasse, keeps you tethered to the city's energy, yet the lake and Alpine backdrop pull your attention outward. It's a place for people who want Zurich to feel both cosmopolitan and quietly cinematic, where even the rooftop bar draws locals, not just guests. That says something.
