The approach alone sets the tone. A long, tree-lined boulevard opens to a white facade of stately proportions, its symmetry and shuttered windows unmistakably French colonial, its gardens unmistakably tropical. Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor has stood in Siem Reap since 1932, originally built to receive the first wave of travelers drawn to the temples of Angkor Wat. Nearly a century later, the property remains the most storied address in the region, its architecture preserved with the kind of care that honors every original detail while making the whole feel alive rather than museum-like. Black-and-white checkered floors, wooden ceiling fans turning slowly overhead, elephant motifs throughout the interiors, and a cage elevator that still operates as it did decades ago give the hotel a character that cannot be replicated.
The grounds stretch across fifteen acres of manicured gardens, landscaped courtyards, and towering tropical trees that lend the property a sense of seclusion rare for a hotel so centrally located. Two swimming pools anchor the outdoor experience, including the landmark pool surrounded by frangipani trees where guests spend long afternoons between temple excursions. Accommodations range across heritage rooms and suites within the original building, where period furnishings and four-poster beds maintain the colonial atmosphere, to the Landmark and Cabana rooms that open onto the gardens and pool. The Personality Suites pay tribute to notable historical guests and figures connected to the property's past, each designed with distinctive character.
Dining unfolds across several distinct venues. Restaurant Le Grand offers French and Khmer cuisine in an elegant colonial dining room, while the Apsara Terrace serves dinner accompanied by traditional Apsara dance performances, creating one of the most iconic dining experiences in Southeast Asia. The Elephant Bar, a destination in its own right, has been serving its signature cocktails beneath rattan fans since the hotel's earliest days, its atmosphere steeped in the kind of old-world charm that invites lingering. The Writers Bar and a poolside dining option round out the food and beverage offerings. The Raffles Spa provides treatments drawing on both local Khmer traditions and contemporary wellness practices, set within serene treatment rooms that look out onto the gardens.
Siem Reap radiates outward from the hotel's front doors. The temples of Angkor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lie just minutes away, and the hotel's concierge can arrange private sunrise visits, guided archaeological tours, and excursions to more remote temple complexes beyond the main circuit. The town itself offers night markets, galleries, and a growing culinary scene along its central streets. But Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor operates at its own pace. There is a particular rhythm here, shaped by the weight of its history and the generosity of its grounds, where mornings begin with birdsong in the garden and evenings end with a gin pahit at the Elephant Bar. It is the rare hotel where the building itself is as much a destination as what surrounds it.

What we love about this stay
There's a particular quality to a 1930s colonial hotel that hasn't tried to reinvent itself — where the architecture still carries its original conviction and the gardens have had decades to grow into something genuinely lush rather than landscaped yesterday. Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor feels like that kind of place. The scent of lemongrass and jasmine in the lobby isn't decorative; it's atmospheric, grounding you in Cambodia before you've even reached your room. French design sensibility and Khmer motifs coexist without competing, and those high ceilings and wooden floors give the spaces a weight that newer builds rarely achieve. The Elephant Bar, with its live pianist and lingering sense of another era, is the sort of room you don't want to leave quickly. It's a hotel for travelers who understand that proximity to Angkor Wat deserves more than a convenient base — it deserves a place that takes its own history just as seriously.
