The Surfrider Malibu sits right on the Pacific Coast Highway, a 20-room boutique hotel that feels less like a place to stay and more like a way of living along this particular stretch of coastline. The building is a reimagined mid-century motel, stripped back and rebuilt with an eye toward natural materials, organic textures, and the kind of laid-back coastal sophistication that resists trying too hard. Reclaimed wood, linen, and a muted palette of whites and warm neutrals let the light and landscape do most of the work. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Pacific in certain rooms, while others open onto the mountains that rise just across the highway. It is small by design, intimate by nature.
The rooms are arranged across three floors, each one individually appointed with custom furnishings, Parachute bedding, and Aesop bath products. Some offer private balconies with direct ocean views, others face the hills, and all share the same unhurried sensibility. There is no television in the rooms, a deliberate omission that nudges guests toward the water, the rooftop, or simply the feeling of being unoccupied for a while. The hotel's rooftop deck is perhaps its most magnetic space, an open-air gathering point with panoramic views of the coastline where guests settle in at golden hour, the sound of the surf rising from below.
Downstairs, the ground-floor restaurant and café anchor the social life of the property. The café serves organic coffee and light bites in the mornings, drawing both hotel guests and locals who have folded it into their routines. The restaurant offers a menu rooted in locally sourced, plant-forward California cuisine, with seafood and seasonal produce shaping what comes to the table. Meals are served in a sunlit dining room or on the adjacent patio, and the atmosphere stays casual, the kind of place where sandy feet and salt-dried hair feel perfectly appropriate. Sustainability runs through the property's operations, from the filtered water system to the partnership with Surfrider Foundation, the nonprofit dedicated to protecting the world's oceans and beaches.
Malibu itself is the context that makes everything here work. The point breaks and surf spots that define this coast are minutes away. Hiking trails wind into the Santa Monica Mountains. Farm stands and roadside produce stalls punctuate the drive in either direction. The Surfrider Malibu does not compete with any of this. It simply positions you inside it, offering a place to return to when the day softens and the light turns amber over the water. What stays with you is the scale of it, how a hotel this small can hold so much sky.

What we love about this stay
It's the smallness that gets you — not in scale, but in ambition. The Surfrider isn't trying to be a grand coastal resort. It's a boutique hotel across from one of the most storied surf breaks in the world, and it knows exactly what that means. The rooms are quiet, dressed in natural textures and muted tones that don't compete with the ocean outside your window. The rooftop, reserved for guests, feels less like a scene and more like a private perch where locally sourced food and a good cocktail meet an unobstructed view of the pier and the Pacific. There's a surfboard waiting for you downstairs if you want it, no fanfare attached. That's the whole ethos here — proximity to something iconic, handled with restraint. It suits the kind of traveler who doesn't need a hotel to perform luxury, just to stay out of the way of a very good stretch of coast.

Loved this little gem. Directly across from the Malibu Pier and a super busy surfing beach, we enjoyed a tranquil room wi th beautiful views of the beach. We decided to eat every meal at the rooftop restaurant since it was so wonderful. Fresh farm to table. Super friendly staff and very quiet. Not a scene but more of a hidden gem. I’d go back.

This place is soooooo cool. The staff is friendly and kind. The hotel is hip and the rooms are amazing. They smell so good that I bought the room spray! There was lavender in my bathroom, cool hammock on the balcony, a yoga mat in the room, and plenty of places to plug in all my stuff. I loved the coffee brouht to the room in the morning with a surf report and weather report. They provide a cute handout that tells you places to go in the area and I took 2 days and did just that. I saw amazing beaches and cool shops. I sat upstairs and watched the surfers while eating breakfast and really enjoyed the farm to table dinner too. My only and I do mean only " dislike" was that I was directly under the service bar so I could hear them in the evening. That said, the hotel warned me and even had a white noise machine in the room. It wasn't that loud and they were quiet before I was bed bound. I so hope to get to go back to this amazing spot. Maybe this time, I will just use the towels and beach bag and hang at the beach, eat at the pier, and read in the adorable library upstairs from the lobby.

The Surfrider is an amazing small beach hotel right by Malibu Pier. The rooms are gorgeus, the staff superfriendly and supercool, and the food is just the best! This is our new favourite hotel in LA ❤️ Thay helped us book all restaurants. Just love this place!

The iconic location, fabulous rooftop dining, and hot (!) outdoor shower with Grown Alchemist products post-surf would have already clinched me for life, but what really sets the Surfrider apart is the outstanding hospitality. Each of our interactions with desk, bar and restaurant staff made us feel like we were being really warmly welcomed and well cared for. Special shout out to lovely Chloe at reception, who went out of her way to make an early check-in happen for us when we arrived ahead of schedule, day one, and then set us up with our first choice complimentary longboards to surf across the street, day two. Loved the library’s early a.m. coffee service—a must for early risers! Loved the balcony hammocks and Parachute bathrobes. Loooved the playlist, ceviche, and handmade pasta for dinner, and the attentive but laid back execution of everything across the board. We’ll be back!
