Our favorite place in Pioneertown, hands-down. This iconic property is perfectly located just off of Main Street and is clean, comfortable and truly epic in scale. If you are coming out to the desert, don’t think twice. Book The Outlaw.

The road narrows past Joshua Tree and keeps climbing, threading through boulder fields and yucca groves until the landscape opens into something that looks more like a film set than a town. That's because it partly is. Pioneertown was built in the 1940s as a living Western movie set, and its single Mane Street still carries the quiet theatricality of a frontier outpost frozen between fiction and real life. The Outlaw sits just off this stretch, a vacation rental that leans fully into the mythology of its surroundings while offering the kind of comfort that makes the desert feel less like endurance and more like surrender.
The property is a private residence styled with a bold, Western-inflected aesthetic. Interiors draw on the raw textures of the high desert: exposed wood, warm leather, layered textiles, and a palette that echoes the tawny earth and bleached sky outside. The space accommodates groups with multiple bedrooms and generous communal areas designed for gathering rather than retreat. A fully equipped kitchen anchors the living space, and outdoor areas extend the footprint considerably, with seating arranged to face the open desert and the kind of unobstructed night sky that makes city dwellers go quiet. The property's appearance on Netflix has given it a certain cult visibility, but the experience itself is unhurried and analog. This is a place built for slow mornings, long afternoons, and evenings organized around fire and stars.
Pioneertown itself is a destination with a personality far larger than its population. Pappy & Harriet's, the legendary honky-tonk and music venue just down the road, draws musicians and travelers from across the country for live shows and mesquite-grilled meals in a setting that feels untouched by trend. The broader Morongo Basin and Joshua Tree National Park are within easy reach, offering hiking, rock scrambling, and the surreal geological landscapes that have made this corner of the California desert a magnet for artists, seekers, and anyone looking to decompress on a geological timescale. The area's creative community has shaped a constellation of small galleries, shops, and roadside attractions that reward aimless exploration.
The Outlaw doesn't try to polish the desert into something it isn't. It meets the landscape on its own terms, offering shelter, warmth, and a sense of character that feels genuinely rooted in this particular stretch of dirt and sky. What stays with you is the stillness, the way the light shifts across the valley in long, unhurried arcs, and the rare pleasure of a place where disconnection isn't a luxury amenity but simply the way things are.

There's a particular kind of quiet that belongs to seventeen acres of high desert — not silence exactly, but a hum, a spaciousness that recalibrates your sense of scale. The Outlaw leans into its cinematic Pioneertown roots without turning them into kitsch; the big saloon, the cowboy tub, the funky church art installation all feel like they belong here rather than being staged for you. It's a place that rewards groups who want to gather loudly around fire pits one evening and then scatter into hammocks the next afternoon, each person finding their own pocket of solitude. Pappy & Harriet's is practically next door, and Joshua Tree is a short drive away, but the property itself is the destination — that night sky, with almost no light pollution, earns its reputation honestly. What stays with you is the tension between vastness and intimacy, how a place this open can still feel like it's entirely yours.

This is our second time staying at The Outlaw, and we had such a blast! The property was great for our kids to run around and explore while playing cowboys! The property itself is nice and close to Pioneertown which we did a walk through, as well as antique shops down the road. The house, saloon, chapel, pool, hot tub, and train are all awesome aspects of the property. The team was very responsive and helpful through our stay and we will definitely be back again. Recommended for everyone, even if you have newborns or toddlers!
